In 1825, a group of farmers purchased land near the present day Overland Dunkin' Donuts location and began to grow coffee. They named their new business The Coffee House Café. Overland is a small town in the eastern Missouri Ozarks. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by General John C. Frémont as Overland Station on the Dearborn River computed from his original survey of that area. The name originated with General Fremont's plan to cross the Great Plains by way of Overland Pass and to use what he called "the overland route" to reach California. In 1868, Overland became an incorporated community when it was included within Springfield Township (later named Jefferson County). In 1915, it merged into nearby Liberty Grove Township with about 1,000 other residents. Today Overland still maintain its independent spirit and unique character which sets it apart from other towns in this region; for example, all citizens are required to wear a sheriff's badge at all times while they are not actually law enforcement officers or village officials; no water meters are used; and there is no school system! One reason why Overlanders remain so popular is their easy access to nature trails which include miles of hiking and biking trails as well as a number of fishing rivers and streams. There are also several golf courses located within close proximity including two municipal courses operated by the township government: one near downtown OverLAND and another km away just outside rural Liberty Grove Township on Ulysses Road east of Route 66 exit 5A (Exit 214/215).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 553 people, 186 households, and 139 families residing in the town. The population density was 11 residents per square mile (4/km²). There were 228 housing units at an average density of 6 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of overlanders was 97% White, 1% African American, 2% Native American, and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4% of overlanders
