The town of O'Fallon, Missouri was founded in 1836 as a farmstead on the banks of the Arkansas River. The first settler in what is now O'Fallon was John Fenton, who arrived in 1836. By 1840, there were twenty-four residents living in O'Fallon. The post office was established in 1841 and continued until it closed in 1865. In 1853, the Works Progress Administration placed a mill built by local contractor George Gentry on the riverbank to serve as a water supply for the town. In 1908, the mill burned down and destroyed most of the town originally built around it. In 1915, local farmers James Hickey and Charles Grimes organized a group to purchase 160 acres (72 hectares) of land at which they erected a school house and storage barn. They named their new community "O'Fallon" after their home state of Iowa where they were born and raised. The community grew rapidly during World War I with donations from soldiers and civilians alike who helped build roads, houses, churches, hospitals and other infrastructure. After World War I ended, many businesses opened up around thetown including several stores and restaurants along with two schools- one specializing in agriculture and one for students from nearby towns like Independence Grove or Hillsboro which had all joined forces to try to keep O'Fallon functioning as an open-air market place during days when that wasn't possible indoors due to air raids or other emergencies
