Nixa, Missouri (population: 2,000) is a small town in east-central Missouri. It was founded in 1836 by Captain James K. Polk and his family as the nucleus of what would become the City of Nixa. The city was named for General James K. Polk's daughter Nixa, who died young at age 6 in an illness related to measles. The original plat of Nixa was filed on December 5, 1836 and approved on January 3, 1837 by the territorial legislature. On November 27, 1840 the first election for members of the county court took place in Nixa after being called for by then County Judge John Ladd. The first courthouse building was built in 1861 and it burned down in 1865; however, a new courthouse was built and it still stands today (along with a number of other public buildings). In 1863 General Andrew Johnson visited Nixa and announced that he would be running for President on the ticket of "New York Overalls". However before he could leave town he contracted pneumonia which caused him to die on October 15th from natural causes at the age of 61 years 8 months; this made him only the second American president to die while running for office (the first being William McKinley). As a result of Johnson's death local politics changed dramatically as many believe that he likely would have won had he not been term limited at 71 years old. The city continued to grow throughout Reconstruction until World War II when its population peaked at around 2,500 people; however due to military expansion within Missouri during that time its population has slowly declined over time. Nixa, Missouri is an unincorporated community located in southern Boone County, Missouri. It was laid out in 1858 by Daniel Boone and named for his friend and mentor, Nixa Hill. The community had a post office from 1880 to 1886. In 1902, the population of Nixa was 2,635 people. By 1930, the population had decreased to 1,711 people. In 1951, the town was platted and became part of the Springfield-Springfield Heights Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Springfield-Springfield Heights increased from about 80,000 in 1950 to over 150,000 by 2000. In 2011, Springfield-Springfield Heights merged with nearby Hannibal to form the Hannibal-Nixa Combined Statistical Area which has a population of about 180,000 people. The history of Nixa begins with Daniel Boone's arrival in 1828 on what is now called "Boone's Fork". He established himself along what is now State Route 66 between Lebanon and Cairo counties as a fur trader and land speculator. He soon married Rachelle French who bore him four children: James (1829-1911), John (1831-1904), Jefferson (1833 - 1925) and attitudes that would guide him throughout his life; strong religious beliefs tempered by pragmatism; practicality led him to explore new opportunities while remaining true to his roots as a hunter/gathering peoplesman despite trading power differences with other nations on the Great Lakes region at that time He died at age 72 following several years of illness near Lebanon on May 5th 1852 after exploring many new areas including this area where he founded Nixa Creek Landing on July 17th 1830 just east of present day Lebanon."
