The community sprung up around a Methodist church on the banks of the Kishwaukee River. In 1846, the first school opened in Nixa. By 1870, there were six schools in town. A Baptist church was built in 1892 and a Masonic Lodge was organized in 1896. The population grew to 1,600 by 1910 and peaked at 2,500 in 1920. By 1930, it had shrunk to 100 residents.
