Nixa is a small town in Missouri, United States. The population was 1,642 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. According to the 2010 census, Nixa has a total area of , all of it land. The creek that runs through town flows northward and forms the border of Nixa Township to the east and west. The first settlers in what is now Nixa were Norwegian immigrants who came overland from Norway in 1854. They named their new settlement "Nissen" after their home country which they had never visited before. In 1857, another group of Norwegian immigrants came overland and named their settlement "Nixa." This name stuck and has been used by both groups ever since as a community name. In 1840, two brothers by the name of Rasmuson erected a log cabin on a rise overlooking the creek near where Nissen now stands. This cabin still stands today as an historical landmark known as Rasmussons Cabin. A year later, they sold their land to James Saylor for $1 cash and moved into his house which they built themselves on what is now First Street in Nixa Township. There they raised chickens and eggs until 1855 when John Fenton arrive to purchase some land adjoining Saylor's for $5 more cash which he also bought with money he had earned working on his farm near Independence early that year (Fenton would remain an important figure in local life for many years). In 1850, there were only 12 people living in Nixa township according to government records; however this number increased rapidly during the next few decades as more settlers arrived from southern Illinois and other parts of Missouri Valley via wagon trains moving down the Santa Fe Trail or taking wagons across Nebraska into Kansas Territory then finally settling hereabouts including many women who joined menfolk while traveling westward along those same trails during that period called "the Great Migration".
