On January 10, 1834 Sennett married Mary Denton and changed the name of his camp to Nixa after she arrived from Kentucky with her parents shortly afterwards. In 1840 Nixa had a population of about seventy-five people; by 1850 it had grown to one hundred residents. In 1861 more than one thousand men from sixteen states loyal to Confederate America fought under General Robert Ewell during the American Civil War in nearby Fort Donelson; many of these men founded what became known as "Nixa Legion", which helped garrison Union positions around the town during that conflict. Themoderately prosperous town experienced rapid growth following World War II when federal money began flowing into Johnson County through programs such as GIs brought home with VE Day medals—thus giving impetus to local businesses such as grocery stores and millinery stores located along Highway 506/Upper Valley Road adjacent to military barracks housing thousands of soldiers/helpers from all over the country during that war period.
