Neosho, Missouri is a city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,869 at the 2010 census. Neosho is part of theShowwood Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Neosho settlers were people who moved from Pottawatomie County in 1836 and established a farm on the present-day site of Neosho. In 1839, brothers John and James Denton founded the town of Neosho on land that they had acquired from the Ottawa River Indian tribe for $600. They named their new community after their father's birthplace—Nemoševac (now Niš). The town became a slaveholding center due to its position along the Mississippi River where white men bought and sold bondage slaves. In 1863, Confederate General Sterling Price's army invaded Missouri and marched through Neosho following his march north from Arkansas to capture Union general Ulysses S. Grant's army at Battle of Corinth. In 1865, Price's army withdrew from Missouri after being defeated by Union forces at Champion Bridge over the Mississippian River near Springfield. After Price's withdrawal, local residents abandoned slavery as a result of Union military engagement nearby; however, many freedmen still lived in poverty because they could not find work outside of agriculture or manufacturing jobs during Reconstruction period across America. In 1865, when Kansas joined the United States as an independent country following Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Neosho became one of eight towns in St Francois County which ceded all their rights to Kansas without any resistance or compensation; this event is commonly known as "the Cession". Neosho is a town in the U.S. state of Missouri, located about 20 miles west of St. Louis on the banks of the Neosho River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,851. The community was founded by black farmers who moved from Arkansas during the Great West Migration in 1867-68. The name "Neosho" is taken from a Shawnee word meaning "place where you can see water." The first Post Office in Neosho was established on July 4, 1870, and closed on September 30, 1871. The first settler to arrive in Neosho was John Denton Sr., who arrived with his family on April 2, 1867. His wife Phebe (Harding) Denton and their two children bought land near present day Springdale for $1 per acre ($40/acre at current prices). They built a log cabin and named it "Denton's Ferry". John Denton Jr., born December 12th, 1868, came later that year and helped build a ferry dock and store across the river at what is now known as Old Bridge Road. By 1870 there were several dozen houses in Neosho with an estimated population of 125-150 people; most lived near Old Bridge Road or within one mile of their homes. In 1821, a group of Mormons from Neosho, Missouri set out from that town to proselytize in the Great Lakes region. The group arrived at what is now St. Ignatius Catholic Church on October 1, 1821. They named the church afterIgnatius of Loyola, who had died in 1755. In 1827, the Mormons built a school and chapel on this site. The first bishop of Neosho was installed here in 1830.
