Neosho, Missouri is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Urbana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Neosho was James Treadway who arrived in 1836. After being granted land by the government and starting to farm, Treadway built a cabin in 1840 on what is now milepost 9 on Route 66. A post office called Neosho was established in 1848, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1861, Neosho became an independent city when it seceded from Jackson County. In 1865, the area that would become Neosho was named for John Fenton Shaver Sr., a businessman and later governor of Missouri who had donated land for the city. The first mayor of Neosho was George Hakeem Butler. The city's economy changed substantially when Kansas City began to grow rapidly after its Sherman Act victory over slavery during the American Civil War. The arrival of large numbers of workers led to new businesses opening up throughout the town and soon Neosho became one of KC's most important industrial centers. With heavy manufacturing plants such as Armour & Company (later JBL), Radio Corporation of America (RCA), Kaiser Permanente (now UnitedHealth Group) and others located here, jobs were available for all classes of citizens including those living below poverty lines or working long hours outside the home without any paid sick days or vacation time! One local official remembered: "There wasn't one family that couldn't find work here... everyone had something to do." After World War II ended with Victory Over Japan Day on August 15th 1945 - more than two years after Japanese forces had invaded - many people left Neosho for good because there were no job opportunities postwar anywhere near as great as they had been before war started!
