Moberly was laid out on December 21, 1838, by George A. Smith and Jno. Hays-Cummings, two of the original settlers of this territory (now Stephens County). The name Moberly was derived from an Indian word meaning "place where something grows." The first store in Moberly was built by Wm. Treadwell on Main Street in 1841; it operated for four years until moved to what is now West Virginia Avenue in 1845. In 1847, Ebenezer Cook opened a grocery store on Third Street which continued to be the largest and most successful business in the community until 1870 when it went out of business due to competition from larger stores. In 1850 John Denton founded the first cotton gin in this area; it was located near present-day Route K Road and Deer Creek Drive west of town center. This gin produced cotton until 1907 when it became a machine shop and then closed down completely during World War I because of wartime production restrictions; however, remnants can still be seen today inside what used to be the building’s garage attached to Interstate 55 east of town center. In 1865 David Ewing organized a local militia company which he called "The Carbineers" because they favored using rifles instead of pistols for self-defense against Indians who were terrorizing nearby settlements such as Moberly at that time.
