The Missouri National Guard was organized on August 14, 1861, in Springfield, Missouri. The unit was initially called theSpringfield and Moberly Regiment of Artillery. On November 1, 1861, the regiment was redesignated the Moberly Regiment of Infantry. It would become a full-time military force on February 16th 1865 when it was merged with the other units from Springfield Armory to form the Missouri Volunteer Infantry Brigade (U.S.) The brigade fought in several battles during the American Civil War including Battle of Pea Ridge, Battle of Missionary Ridge, and Battle of Independence Hill. After the war ended, many veterans returned home and were discharged by military authorities in Moberly at various locations around town. The brigade eventually disbanded on September 25th 1865.

Moberly, Missouri is a small town in northern Missouri. The population was 1,851 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Moberly is home to K-12 schools, a library, and a variety of businesses including several churches and a post office. The first people to live in what is now Moberly were the Pawnees. They built their village on the banks of the White River near present day Independence Road and Broadway Avenue. In 1819, when white settlers began moving into this territory, they named their new settlement for General Andrew Jackson because he had been successful in driving out the British from North America during that war. The first church in Moberly was organized on October 17, 1821 by Revs. James Robertson and Peter Jones with help from some local farmers who pooled their money to build one costumed pastor for services on Sundays at First Baptist Church west of Main Street (this building still stands). The congregation grew rapidly and by 1830 there were six churches located in Moberly with more than 100 members! In 1835, Indian removal began as tensions between Native Americans and newcomers mounted over land claims and other issues related to whiskey farming operations by whites along the Great Plains Trail. Many families decided to leave central Missouri for Oklahoma Territory where they would have warmer climates and less competition for resources! By 1840 many residents of Moberly had left or been forced out following violence or military campaigns led by General William Harned against Apaches occupying southwestern Kansas Territory. Moberly's heyday came after World War II when it became an important center for both agricultural production and research involving aircraft manufacturing at Wichita State University/Kansas City Air Show Airport until that airport closed in 2003 due to budget cuts within DoD (Department of Defense). Today much of downtown has been preserved as part of Historic District #9 which includes portions of Independence Road Extension which ran through town from east to west before turning northerly towards Osage Hills; main street retains its original name while most business blocks have changed hands multiple times since then; several homes dating back to pioneer days are still standing; numerous gravesites can be found throughout central Moerville including those associated with prominent individuals such as Dirck Ahern (1796-1863), Elijah Hill (1824-1900), Jeptha Bemis (baptized 1827), Hiram Jennings (died 1880) & his wife Abigail Jennings (1831-1920); George Washington Cobb(baptized 1792) also lived here briefly before moving away about 1850; Daniel Boone(1772-1832) killed his horse here around 1800 & his rifle stock remains extant today at Boone National Forest headquarters just outside OFR’s boundaries
