The town of Moberly, Missouri was known for its military deployment history. The town's first military deployment was in the Civil War. Moberly served as a Union garrison and participated in the Battle of Corinth. After the war, Moberly became a Confederate stronghold and played an important role in the Siege of Vicksburg. In 1865, Moberly sided with the Union army during the American Civil War and was given land by President Abraham Lincoln to form what is now called Veterans Park.
Moberly, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1836 by Daniel Boone and his family as a trading post on the confluence of the White River and Moberly Creek. The name "Moberly" is derived from an Algonquian word meaning "place where salmon run." In 1854, when General James K. Polk visited Moberly, he noted that it had "the appearance of being built on high ground so as to command a wonderful view of all around." He recommended that the United States Military Post be established there and named Fort Knox after himself. The post was established on December 16, 1854 and later became Fort Scott (1868-1973). In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army crossed the river here with intent to march into Union territory south of Springfield, Illinois. Confederate troops burned down parts of Moberly while they were encamped and withdrew without battle before withdrawing to Richmond County in Virginia entirely unopposed by Union forces under Ulysses S Grant. The first white settler in Moberly was George Wray who arrived about 1840 from Kentucky with his family; he built a cabin near what is now Main Street/Fort Knox Road intersection (). Wray died in 1849 but his wife continued to live there until her death in 1927 (she may have been buried at nearby Central Cemetery). Other early settlers included John Harrer who began leasing land for farming about 1850; Samuel Stephenson arrived about 1870 from Indiana with three slaves; Gideon Greene settled about 1880 on a piece of land east of Main Street which he called Greeneville (); four other families joined him there over time: Averill Hardison bought land adjacent to Stephenson's farm in 1890; Salmon Pemberton acquired land east of Greene's house in 1904; John Hagedorn purchased land west of Main Street/Fort Knox Road intersection in 1907; and Harry Weibel acquired property northward along Phone Line Road northeastward from Stephenson's farm sometime between 1913 and 1916 (). It wasn't until after World War II that more residents moved into Moberly proper: Elmer Jorgensen moved into what is now First Avenue/MainStreet circa 1945; Clifford Dorney transferred from nearby Rolla about 1950s; Donnie Grieve arrived circa 1960s (); Bob Gates moved into what is now Second Avenue/East Main Street circa 1970s.; Darrell Ennis came over from neighboring Rolla some time around 1990s.; also during this time period many businesses were opened such asRestaurant Depot (1970), hardware store (1971), dental office (1972), etc.; today most residents still work within these businesses or are involved with local government services such as firefighting or law enforcement roles like police officer or sheriff

By 1890, the population of Moberly had reached 30,000 people. However, the Panic of 1893 caused a sharp decrease in business activity and population. The town declined until it disappeared from the map completely in 1920. Today, Moberly is an unincorporated community located in Clay County near Independence. It contains a small museum which features artifacts from the early days of the town as well as photos and manuscripts related to its history.

In 1915, Wernher von Braun began his Training School for Aviation at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and moved it to Moberley after purchasing land there from its previous location on Cemetery Road near Marshall Field Mall. In 1925, Mayor Hutton left office to become president of Old Dominion University; but he continued to serve as mayor until his death in 1951.
