Mexico, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri. The population was 15 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield-Branson micropolitan area and is located about 18 miles east of Springfield and 24 miles west of Branson. The first people to live in Mexico were the Osage Indians. The first white men to arrive in this area were pioneers named John C. Fremont and his party who followed the Santa Fe Trail from California in 1847. They found a good land spot for their cabin on Clear Creek about two miles east of what is now Mexico, Missouri. After some time they built a more permanent cabin, which remains standing to this day. It was here that Fremont met General James K. Polk when he was traveling through this area on his way to points northward in 1848-49 as part of the military campaign known as “the Mexican War” against Mexico’s President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. In 1851, general Zachary Taylor sent an expedition into what is now Mexico to scout out new territory for the United States He discovered some interesting sites including Fort Scott which he decided would be our new territorial capital since Springfield had only been established as an agricultural center a few years before! On January 1, 1861, Kansas became an independent country after it seceded from America following its admission into the Union as a state on February 4th that year; henceforth Mexico became part of Kansas! A post office called “Mexico” was established at this location on October 20th, 1861 (same day fort Scott was renamed Fort Hays). In 1865 there were 7 residents living here; 5 boys and 2 girls! By 1900 there were just 2 residents left – one man working Odd Fellows Lodge No 8 Masonic Temple until his death in 1903 (#8) and his wife having passed away circa 1896 (#9). The early days were difficult for Mexicans trying to get by without English language instruction or assistance from white farmers who had come over with wagon trains during those earliest years; however things began to change around 1890 when a group of young men decided they wanted to make their mark on American life by starting their own business: Lumberjacks #5 & 6 operating a sawmill that supplied lumber needed for building local schools and other infrastructure projects such as roads and bridges etc.; soon afterwards other businesses followed suit with Mexicans becoming mainstay employees doing everything from payroll processing through production line work all the way up until retirement! Mexican War veteran and politician James Prentice became the first county attorney in 1840. The county seat of Mexico, Missouri was moved to Columbia in 1851. In 1865, the Union army under General Ulysses S. Grant defeated Confederate forces at the Battle of Wilson's Creek and Mexico, Missouri became part of the Union side. The last major battle fought in Mexico, Missouri occurred during the American Civil War when Confederate troops attempted to attack a Union military camp near Cairo on April 9-10,1865. Although successful in achieving preliminary objectives, the Confederate force were repulsed by an overwhelming Union force including artillery and cavalry units from General George Custer's 5th Cavalry Regiment which destroyed almost all of their supplies and forced them back to Cairo before withdrawing again that night.
