, and the Osage Indian Nation Mexico is an area of North America located in Central Mexico. It includes all of the state of Puebla, as well as the municipalities of Acapulco, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua and Veracruz. The country was first populated by a group of ancient Mayan Indians who called themselves the Aztecs. They were replaced by other groups, such as the Toltecans and Teotihuacanians, before they were displaced by Spanish settlers in 1521. The area that now occupies Mexico was then part of New Spain until 1821 when it became part of United States. The Mexican Revolution began in 1910 with a attempt to overthrow Spanish rule over Mexico City. On Sept. 24th that year, General Victoriano Huerta defeated Francisco Madero at Chapultepec Park and took control of Mexico City. Huerta's forces continued their resistance against Spanish occupiers until they were finally expelled from the city in 1912 following a military campaign known as "The Crushing Of Chapultepec." Huerta's regime saw great progress in developing technologies such as oil production and automobiles; however, he also faced great opposition from within his own party and from leftist rebels known as Zapatistas who wanted to install a democratic government based on participatory democracy rather than authoritarianism. In 1994-1995 there was an uprising against Huerta's rule known as La República del Estado de Juárez which ultimately failed after being suppressed by Mexican Armed Forces troops backed by United States Special Operations Forces (SOS). Since 2000 there has been sporadic violence along municipal lines between various criminal gangs and drug cartels with no end in sight despite government efforts to suppress these activities.
