Mexico is a country located in North America. The area now known as Mexico City was founded by the Mexica people in the 8th century BC. In 1521, the Spanish conquered and colonized Mexico and made it an official colony of Spain. Mexican independence from Spain was recognized in 1821, but again recognition was short-lived because of continuedSpanish influence. After World War II, Mexican President Manuel Noriega allowed U.S. military forces to use his country for training and experimentation during the Cold War period. Today, Mexicans make up about 50% of the population and are still large contributors to Mexican society. The history of Missouri cannot be told without mentioning its sister state, Texas. For many years Texan settlers had been moving westward into what is now Mexico, hoping to find a land that would grant them dominance over the Mexicans living there (the “Chichimeca”). When General Antonio López de Santa Anna assumed power in 1837 after victory over Mexican rebels at Buenavista Creek, he ordered Santa Anna’s old general Mariano Armas to march on Mexico City and sack it (this event is often called “The Battle of Buenavista”). However, this plan failed when Armas retreated with his army back into Texas after learning of Santa Anna’s intentions; instead he marched on Puebla (present-day Monterrey) where he surrendered on February 17th 1840 under fire from Santa Anna’s forces while his men were looting local homes (the raiders were soon arrested). When Texans began flowing into New Mexico Territory following their victory at Buenavista Creek they encountered resistance from Chiricahua Apaches led by Cochise who managed to keep most Texans out before retreating south into Arizona Territory reaching modern day Durango some time before Christmas 1846.* *It should be noted that Chiricahua Apaches did not actually live near modern day Durango; rather they inhabitated parts of central Arizona which became part of Chihuahua Territory after Yuma County was organized on January 10th 1860.* In 1861 prior to Colorado becoming a statehood movement started by James Douglas* (*See: Kansas Territories), one group of entrepreneurs decided that lands east of the Arkansas River should become part of what would become Kansas Territory due to objections from Nebraska Territorial Governor George Armstrong Custer*. This group included Andrew Johnson*,(*See: Abraham Lincoln), future president Ulysses S Grant*,(*See: James Buchanan*) and John Nicolay*. On April 14th 1861 Johnson sent a letter approved by Grant asking for 6 million acres†† east of Canadian River for what would eventually become Kansas* *. The same year saw construction begin on Fort Leavenworth which would serve as the capital city for Kansas Territory until 1907 when Topeka was chosen as the new capital; however Topeka never regained its former glory as it experienced multiple financial scandals during its tenure.* *During this time period also note another attempt by James Douglas* (*See: Kansas Territories *)to gain admission as a member state within the United States through legislation known as The Compromise Of 1850′ *. This measure would have added Indian territory lying between Oklahoma and Texas along with eastern New Mexico possessions east OF Rio Grande if it had passed but died before it could be presented to Congress*. As mentioned earlier Texanautsm migrating westward combined with annexation efforts by other Western states such as California caused an increase in immigration looking for land north or eastward that might provide similar opportunities/opportunities plus access to cheap labor during these early days outsideof American slavery*. As early immigrants came ashore they formed social clubs/bands which evolved into today’s MexicanAmerican communities across America supplying manual labor for various industries primarily agriculture beginning around 1870 onwards†† *. Eventually organized crime took control resulting in massacres such as those carried out at Waco massacre perpetrated by David Koresh in 1993(?). Although much has changed since then including increased law enforcement activity against gangs violence continues especially along border regions where drug trafficking flourishes(*see below)).
