Mexico, Missouri is a small, Midwestern town located on the Arkansas River. The population of Mexico, Missouri was 2,844 at the 2010 census. The community is named for José María Morelos y Costilla who served as president of Mexico from 1847 to 1850. The first permanent settler in what is now Mexico, Missouri was John Whitehead who arrived in 1830. In 1836, land east of present dayMexico City was granted to Antonio González and others by Mexican President-elect Manuel Mirabeau after they had petitioned him for land grants near the mouth of the Kaskaskia River. The González family developed corn and cotton plantations there until around 1840 when they sold their holdings to John A. Moore who built a sawmill and store in what is now downtown Mexico City. In 1851, José Morelos became president of Mexico and ordered Mexican troops stationed at Fort Smith in Arkansas to be withdrawn because he felt that Kansas should be admitted into the United States as a state instead of being split between Texas and New Mexico which were both part of Alta California (the Mexican Empire). On November 16th, 1851 more than two thousand Mexicans gathered at the old Santa Fe Depot on Main Street in downtown Mexico City to demand access to their new state which they believed would have been given to them if Kansas had been admitted into the Union as an American state rather than split between Texas and New Mexico. After a long standoff with Ulysses S Grant's forces leading up to dawn on November 17th when General Grant announced his decision not to allow admission into force, the Mexicanans surrendered without any shots fired or damage done and were deported back home. In 1880s settlers started arriving from Illinois via Arkansas riverboat several miles downstream from where today's downtownMexico City stands; this farming/ ranching community eventually grew large enough that it called itself "Downtown" but retains its original Spanish name "México." By 1900 Downtown had grown sufficiently large that it decided against retaining its original Spanish name - it reverted back now known simply as "Mexico." Today Downtown Mexicali boasts some interesting buildings dating back over 100 years including: The County Courthouse (1868), The Briggs Block Hotel (1911), Oneida Savings Bank (1898), Mission San Francisco de Asís Church (1899), Pemex Building #2-A (1982) & Pemex Building #2-B(1983). The economy here has traditionally been based on agriculture with significant production values coming from livestock such as cattle and pigs; dairy products such as cheese; fruits like apples; beans; potatoes; quinoa; produce such as tomatoes etc.; construction materials like bricks etc.; services such as legal representation etc.; peso coins are still used extensively throughout much of these parts although there have been recent efforts towards digital currency acceptance especially within nightclubs/ bars etc... most importantly Restaurants continue serving up traditional dishes made with local ingredients!

Mexico, Missouri History: Mexico is a small town in northeastern Missouri. It was founded in 1836 by Zenon H. Preus and his family as a trading post on the Arkansas River. The original name of the post was Pecos. In 1839, Mexico became an independent republic and changed its name to Mexico City. In 1865, Mexican-American War veteran and Ulysses S. Grant had his first visit to Mexico City as President of the United States. He toured the city and met with leaders of the Mexican Revolution, which had started two years earlier in April 1861. On this trip, Grant also conferred with Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico about how to end the war between American settlers and Native Mexicans who were fighting for their independence from Spain. As president, Grant condemned Maximilian's actions during the war and he ordered Ulysses S. Lane to bomb Monterrey on July 16th after being informed that civilians were being killed by Maximilian's forces. This event is known as The Day Of The Bombing of Mexico City (1865). In 1867, James Kellar donated land at what is now called Kellar Park in Mexico City for a public school district that would serve all citizens regardless of race or color. The school district was established in 1870 and opened its doors to students from all over Mexicali County including Mexico City itself! In 1911, students from nearby Poteet moved into what is now known as classrooms inside the old convento de San Francisco de Asís where they continue instruction until today! During World War II, many soldiers garrisoned at Fort Sumter here camped out before moving on into Kansas or Texas where they joined up with other units fighting against Nazi Germany! The fort surrendered on April 14th 1945 just days before Japan's atomic attack against Hiroshima!!! Today there are several cultural attractions located inside or around Fort Sumter including one dedicated to Japanese Americans who served here during World War II! There are also several museums located within easy walking distance of Fort Sumter including one devoted entirely to military history!!!
