On February 2nd, 1889 Major Hickey was transferred from brigade command to become brigade commander of Department No 5; he remained there until March 6th when he assumed command of Brigade Pancho Villa's forces operating against American forces under General Crocker in Monterrey; he withdrew those troops after they were routed by Ulysses S Grant's army on April 8th). From then until May 30th major Hickey commanded all infantry force in Mexican territory east of the Rio Grande River adjacent to Texas; during this time no artillery or cavalry units were assigned thereto). On January 14th, 1893 Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer relieved Colonel John Jaucourt as commanding officer of Division X (Mexico City); Colonel Jaucourt reverted back to battalion command effective that date upon assignment thereto from Commandos Battalion F ( Texarkana). In 1898 brigadier general George Armstrong Custer served as acting commanding general for Division X following the death of Lieutenant Colonel James Wickersham who had been appointed divisional commander two weeks earlier; upon its reestablishment on February 17th Custer continued serving as acting commanding general until June 7th when he succeeded him and remained so until September 10th when he returned home after completing his tour with service in Europe.

The history of Mexico, Missouri begins with the arrival of Spanish traders in the 16th century. The area that is now Mexico, Missouri was first settled by Native Americans, and early European explorers found it to be a rich land full of natural resources. Over time, the United States acquired much of what is now Mexican territory through treaties and negotiations with Great Britain. In 1846, after a series of devastating earthquakes struck St. Louis, Congress passed an act authorizing President James K. Polk to annex parts of Texas and California into the United States. As a result, Mexican soil and people were effectively taken away from them and they began to lose their way in an ever-changing America. In 1848, Mexicans who had been living in Kansas Territory (now Oklahoma) petitioned Ulysses S. Grant for permission to create a new state called California on their lands east of the Rockies as part of what would become known as the Mexican American War (1846-48). Grant granted the request and soon after troops arrived to lead what became known as The Californian Expedition: A expedition led by Major General Stephen Kearny seeking annexation by the United States into its expanding empire. By 1850, most Mexicans living east of the Rockies had relocated westward along the Santa Fe Trail under pressure from Ulysses S.
