Maryville, Missouri is a small town located in St. Louis County, Missouri on the edge of the Ozarks. The population was 9,681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area and is bordered by Ferguson to the east and north, Saint Peters to the south, and Ballwin to the west. The site of Maryville was chosen by Abraham Lincoln for his new presidential home during his first term in office (1861-1865). The city was founded in 1837 as a small post office named after Mary Todd Lincoln’s great-grandmother, Catherine Hickman Garrett. It became an incorporated town in 1853 and grew rapidly thanks to its fertile farmland and river access. In 1860, when Abraham Lincoln became president of United States, he selected Maryville as his presidential home because it offered easy access to both capital markets and resources essential for Ulysses S. Grant’s victory over General Robert Ewell at the Battle of Antietam National Battlefield two years earlier. Lincoln died at Maryville on April 14, 1865 just days before his inauguration as Ulysses S. Grant’s fourth president – one year after he had moved from Springfield into this large presidential mansion next door at Ford’s Theatre (now called Independence Hall). At that time it was still considered one of America’s most prestigious residences due largely to its size (it could accommodate up to thirty-six guests) and high quality furnishings (including many antiques dating back centuries). However, with growing tensions between Democrat President James Buchanan and Republican President Andrew Johnson following Buchanan’s unsuccessful defense of Fort Sumter in 1861–1863, few people were invited inside during these tense times. By 1868 only a handful of members remained living inside; all but one had left by then for other locations within or outside America due to political conflict or economic depression triggered by American involvement in European wars abroad while also experiencing devastating floods wrought by winter rains across much of North America which caused extensive damage including $5 million ($100 million today) worth in damage done “just within [Maryville] alone!…What has become an unoccupied property now contains about 4500 residents although there are no buildings on it that are not used for housing purposes!…." In addition to providing comfortable living quarters for presidents like Ulysses S. Grant and Franklin D Roosevelt who toured here during their second terms as Ulysses S., this area also served as a recreation ground where military engagements such as Appomattox Court House were fought out around Maryville Rectory until 1865 when Union forces destroyed this structure followed which ended Reconstruction in America resulting major social changes throughout black Americans across southern states leading up through civil rights movements starting with African Americans voting beginning with passage of laws legalizing slavery starting with women getting married becoming mothers having children being born into poverty ending finally Jim Crow Laws developing later becoming legalized race riots known collectively as “the Great Migration Movement” creating millions more jobs all while costing taxpayers trillions more than originally thought via increased crime rates urban sprawl/suburbanization etc.) Today's downtown core still houses many historical buildings along John F Kennedy Boulevard including Ford's Theatre mentioned earlier while portions off JFK Boulevard facing Interstate 55 have been turned into light retail corridors including Midtown Shopping Center featuring Macy's Affiliate store among others
