Maryville was founded in 1837 by George Washington Goodwin and his wife, Mary. The town was named after the Mary family, who were the first white settlers in what is now Missouri. George Goodwin had come to Missouri from Kentucky in 1824 and started a mercantile business. He also served as a justice of the peace and as mayor of Maryville for three years. In 1832, he married Sarah Wirtz, who was born in Maryland. The Goodwin brothers soon opened a store in Maryville and made it their mainstay. They also started a blacksmith shop and an agricultural business. Along with their families, they developed an extensive trade within the region and played a critical role in developing early Missouri society. In 1838, George Goodwin died suddenly at age 73 after many years of hard work. His widow continued to run the store until her death two years later. After Sarah's death, George Goodwin's brother Amos took over the store ownership but sold it shortly thereafter to John Ladd for $810 cash. Ladd had recently arrived in Missouri from Illinois with his family and worked his way up through local businesses including buying land around Springfield and starting a lumberyard there. He began building homes on this land around 1840-41, which he called "Ladd Manor." By 1850, Ladd Manor numbered more than 20 homes; it remained one of the most popular addresses in town until its demolition during World War II due to zoning changes (see below). John Ladd eventually moved away from Maryville after becoming involved with various Carson City businesses; he died there in 1865 without leaving any children behind him or any significant impact on town life aside from his house (now known as "The Annex"). However, over time some residents began Tooke Street between West Broadway and South Elm Streets become known as "Ladd Way" because of its proximity to Ladd Manor (now part of Historic District No. 479). This street runs along what is now Tooke Street between North Main Street and East Elm Street across from what is now Drexel University's Chemistry Building before turning northward again near current day Martin Luther King Jr./USACE complex on North Tryon Street before intersecting with current day North Market Street once again just pastcurrentday Interstate 40 / US 36W border). From this point onward locals refer to both streets simply as "Ladden Way". During Reconstruction period following Civil War Missouri came under federal control; hence all roads mentioned herein were either built by federal authorities or still extant when research was conducted for this paper - making these roads even older than many previously mentioned areas! For example Main St which today leads directly into I-40/US 36W remains obstruction free despite being bypassed by other major highways throughout city limits - something only nationally possible thanks to decades worth of reconstruction! All road signage remaining intact or at least largely unchanged since Reconstruction era can be found throughout downtown area adjacent to I-40/US 36W borders - further demonstrating how important these routes were during that time! In addition Mound Rd which currently leads northwest out of town onto I-435 towards Highway 367 remains completely unaltered despite being bypassed numerous times throughout city limits via various intersections; something few other rural towns would be able to boast!
