Maryville is a small town in Missouri, United States. The population was 1,451 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Johnson County. The area now known as Maryville was first settled by European Americans in the 1860s. In 1872, an act of Congress designated the current site of Maryville as a village and named it after General Andrew Johnson, who served as President of the United States from 1868 to 1875. The village grew rapidly and by 1880 had a population of 2,500. By 1920, Maryville had grown to 8,000 people and became an important center for agricultural production in Johnson County. After World War II, many farmers moved away from agriculture to pursue other interests such as manufacturing or professional services. Maryville, Missouri is a small town located in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Eureka-Belleville, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1853 by Welsh immigrants. Maryville is named after General John Custer and his unit of cavalry during the Indian Wars. The first permanent settler in Maryville was James McNair who arrived in 1853 from Ireland. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and opened a store there. A post office was established at Maryville in 1854 and remained open until 1907. In 1865, Samuel Foster moved to Maryville from Lebanon and began operating a grocery store/cafeteria which became one of the most popular businesses in town. In 1870, Jephson & Wetherell organized the First Methodist Church at Maryville and it remains today one of the most prominent churches in town. By 1880, many farmers had moved to MaryVILLE from surrounding counties because of good land prospects hereabouts." In 1902, George Waring erected a two-story frame schoolhouse on what is now Third Avenue South near the present day municipal building (now known as West McClendon Middle School).Waring also donated land for an athletic field that would become home to local high school teams since pre-existing Agricultural High School wasn’t large enough to accommodate football or baseball games concurrently with their other activities during those years." John Hinson purchased land adjoining Waring’s property east of 3rd Avenue south in 1904 for use as farmland for his family farmstead called “Hinson’s Hill” which remain today part of nearby West McClendon Middle School." In 1914 Joe Catterson opened Catterson's Cadillac dealership across Third Avenue from then Municipal Building.. continuing through 1922 when it closed due to lack of customers." On November 15th 1915 Charles Fenton made history when he became the first African American registered voter in Jackson County when he voted ballot number 915 at Catterson’s dealership." It wasn't until 1978 that voting rights were finally granted fully to all citizens' within Jackson County following passage of "The Ferguson Amendments" championed by then county executive Don Edwards." Voters ratified these amendments by referendum on November 10th 1978beckoning all residents within county limits including African Americans over age 21 regardless if they lived inside or outside city limits" thereby granting them full access vote just like everyone else!" A total of 227 African Americans registered voters were registered outof an estimated 464 electors statewide that day!" Voting rights officially went into effect on January 1st 1979! At this time over 60%of all black Jackson County residents were registered voters!"eneither race continued to enjoy voting privilege until after passage of Kansas Constitution amendment #265 effective March 6th 1980 granting all citizens right to vote without prior registration or proof Of residency... thus paving way for widespread black political power beginning within our county long before any formal government recognition ever occurred!!"
Maryville was founded in 1836 by a group of Methodist missionaries. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s, and by 1851 it had a population of approximately 10,000. In the 1850s, Maryville became an important center for cotton production, and its Merchants Bank (founded in 1853) became one of the most important banks in Missouri. During the 1960s and 1970s, Maryville experienced significant growth as a result of its strong economic performance and its location within commuting distance of major metropolitan areas. In 2007, Maryville became one of several towns in Missouri to be designated a " City of Neighborhood Opportunity."
