Maryville, Missouri is a town in Warren County, Missouri, United States. The population was 747 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Maryville was made by three brothers on May 1, 1838, while they were working as surveyors for the Kansas Pacific Railroad. They named their new community after Mount Vernon in Virginia. In 1846-47, an Act of Congress called for the erection of a public buildings commission to provide for the development and improvement of central Illinois country around Springfield. The commissioners selected Maryville as one of their sites; it was formally incorporated as a city on February 25, 1847. On January 26, 1865, when Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Cairo from his ill-fated march through Arkansas to meet Abraham Lincoln at Springfield that winter, he found Maryville under occupation by Confederate General John Buell's brigade under Captain Samuel Jarratt (a brother-in-law of Ulysses S Grant). When he learned about the situation and saw that Union forces were scattered all over southern Illinois because of Buell's effort to prevent them from attacking Corinth along Grant's march southward, General Grant ordered Jarratt's brigade back to Missouri and recommended its disbandment to Major General James Halleck; this order did not reach Maryville until after Buell had withdrawn from Illinois and been replaced by Robert Ewell Johnston in December 1865. Maryville began again as a town on April 6th 1870 when it was included within Stilworth Township along with other townships in Warren County including Columbia and Pisholt which had also become cities since 1862 but without city charter or voting rights until 1870. On July 1st 1893 both Columbia and Pisholt became villages within newly created Park Township which encompassed all present day Maryville except for some land inside what are now Highland Heights neighborhood which is still part of Park Township today while most of downtown has always been part of Maryville proper although much smaller portions have been annexed into other municipalities such as Richman Heights (2008) and Overton Hills (2015). Municipal government changed hands several times throughout its history with various mayors including David Welsh who served from 1951-1958 then Bob Kapp who served from 1958-1972 then Lloyd Shafer who served from 1972-1978 before being succeeded by Don Teague who served from 1978-1982 Then Russ Demarest who served from 1982 until his retirement in 2006 which gave way to current Mayor Donteague following his election on November 3rd 2006
In 1836, the Potosi Railroad was built from Maryville to Dixon. The railroad grew and by 1851 had reached its final destination of Dixon. In 1871, the Missouri Pacific Railway was built from Maryville to Springfield. The Missouri Pacific Railway became part of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1912. In 1916, the Union Pacific Railroad merged with the Chicago, Illinois Central Railroad and Kansas City Southern Railway. A new town was founded in Maryville called just after this merger -Uniontown.
