Maryville is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 21,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area and is included in theSaint Louis–St. Peters Combined Statistical Area as well as being part of the Kansas City-Jefferson County-Oakland County region. The first European to visit what is now Maryville was French Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette on July 24, 1692. He named it for his patroness (mother) Marie de Journy (1587-1651). The town was platted in 1839 by Nathan Bedford Forrest and James K. Polk from land donated by George Peabody and family member John Wayman Boothroyd Jr.. After Forrest's death in 1874, the town reverted to its original name of Maryville until it became an incorporated city in 1907 with a population of 10,000 people; however, it had no mayor or council members until 1919 when Harry Truman became president and appointed Robert Moses to be one of three commissioners responsible for developing new areas within Kansas City limits – this became known as "the Moses Plan". In 1941 the US military built Fort Worth Army Air Field just east of town while work continued on nearby Camp Blandford which would become home to Wingate Air Force Base after World War II ended. The city became a center of the cotton industry after it was granted a charter in 1857. In the early 1900s, Maryville experienced some growth as a result of its status as a railroad town. In recent years, however, Maryville has seen significant decline due to its proximity to Kansas City and other metropolitan areas. The beginning of Maryville’s history can be found on July 3rd, 1836 when General James K Polk arrived in the area with his army looking for land for new settlements after being successful at recovering Florida from Spanish control. The Polk family had a farmstead in the community until it was purchased by George Davenport in 1836. In 1840, Davenport donated land to build the present day UI campus. In 1850, the Missouri Pacific Railroad arrived in Maryville and set about building a line from St. Louis to Carbondale. The railroad construction brought heavy traffic and materials to the town which necessitated a new schoolhouse and other public improvements. The town of Maryville benefitted economically from its location on the Missouri Pacific Railroad and developed into an influential community that contributed significantly to the development of education in this area. Numerous prominent citizens of Maryville including Captains James K. Polk and George Davenport were prominent figures in local politics and culture at various points in their careers
