In 1821, Maryville was founded by David Lowry and his wife Maggie. Lowry was a surveyor and mapmaker who had traveled in the area for years. He was familiar with the land and its prospects, so he decided to settle in the area. In 1825, Lowry married Anna Smith, who also came from Missouri. Reverend Humphrey served as pastor oftheChurchofJesusChristandAllLawsfrom1835untilhis death in 1840.
