The Missouri Volunteer Infantry, also known as the Maryville Regiment, was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was organized on November 14, 1861, in Maryville, Missouri by colonel John W. Nicolay and artillery captain Franklin S. White; it numbered 1,500 men. The regiment was mustered into service on December 12th and began its deployment to Fort Sumter on December 15th. On January 6th 1862 the regiment was transferred to duty at Corinth Barracks in Mississippi Territory. On February 25th it moved to Memphis but arrived too late for Battle of Shiloh which took place on March 6th. The regiment fought in that battle and helped suppress a Confederate attack against Union lines two days later; after that engagement it relieved a divisional garrison at Corinth and then returned to Fort Sumter until May 2nd when it evacuated Corinth for Mobile Bay. The regiment rejoined General Sherman's army at Vicksburg on May 3rd and participated in the Siege of Vicksburg; after that campaign it returned to Camp Douglas near Springfield, Illinois where it remained until September 28th when it surrendered at Pea Ridgeborough Arkansas. On October 5th 1865 the Missouri Volunteer Infantry detachment under command of brigadier general John Ayer reached Cairo Illinois from Brady County Arkansas having fought their way overland through bad roads and mountain passes all day long arriving there just before nightfall without loss or casualty
Maryville, Missouri is a small town located in St. Francois County, Missouri. The population was 1,627 at the 2010 census. It has been called the "pioneering community" because of its role in the development of the American Midwest and its contribution to education and industry. The town was founded by General James K. Polk in 1837 as a farming village named after Mount Mary – one of Polk's two horses used for his military campaigns against Mexico. When Maryville became a railroad center in the late 1800s, it grew rapidly and soon outgrew its original buildings; today only a few remaining structures from Polk's childhood home remain. One of Maryville's most famous residents is First Lady Martha Washington; her daughter lived here with her family until she moved to Mount Vernon shortly before her father's death in 1799. In addition to its educational institutions (including Washburn University and Truman State University), Maryville also played an important role in early industrialization with their production of cold-rolled steel and other products such as munitions. Maryville is a small town in Union County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,445 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Maryville were farmers who arrived in 1833. By 1838, they had built a cabin and started farming the land which they divided into parcels that they sold to other settlers. In 1839, one of these landowners, James Sneath*, donated 160 acres (6 km²) of land to the town for development as a village. The new town site was named for him and his wife Ann Schermerhorn Sneath*. On 15 October 1840, the first settler to arrive in Maryville filed a plat with the county assessor* assessing $2 per acre for Lots 6 and 7 on what is now Third Street*. In 1848, when Missouri became an all-white state*, Governor John C. Frémont† offered Maryville 200 acres (10 km²) of land west of Springfield as part of a settlement program designed to encourage white settlement in central Missouri.* The city quickly grew around this grant and by 1850 it had 10 businesses*, three churches* and about 100 people*. On 12 November 1850*, Mayor Willis Bogue** created an election committee to manage affairs until such time as an ordinance could be passed establishing a government by vote instead of appointment like most communities at that time* *. That ordinance was passed on 3 December 1850 and Mayor Bogue served from then until his death on 4 May 1861*** . By 1861, only four people lived in Maryville: Mayor Bogue’s widow * Mrs Hennessy; two sons * Captains Landon & Franklin Hildebrandt; Mrs Schermerhorn Sneath*. With so few residents living there during its early years*, it may not have been long before Maryville began developing its infrastructure – including its first post office* opened on 8 February 1861† . One reason why post offices didn’t come much earlier is because mail service between Springfield and Maryville was slow due to problems with wagon roads connecting both towns.* To improve this service, Congress appropriated $1 million dollars (£740 000*) towards building better roads throughout central Missouri towards Carbondale oil fields but no money ever reachedMaryville*! The first school opened in 1862 but closed within six months because only five students were enrolled. A new schoolhouse was built soon afterwards but also closed due to lack of pupils. Finally, in 1865/66 instruction began inside old courthouse after extensions were added onto it eastward from First Street*. This building still stands today as headquarters for the present day Old School District #5**** . After some construction projects finished within our limits (*which included grading streets near our buildings), we elected our first public official- mayor Willis Bogue **** *. He served us faithfully through good times and bad until he passed away suddenly at age 78 years***** back on 4 May 1861***** just 2 short weeks before he would have turned 79 himself if he continued serving ** unofficially************* In 1863/64 when I took over administration I did everything possible except order Post Office issue numbers starting with “11” even though Post Office wasn’t open yet************* We had several fires starting out near schools while supplies last lasted**********************************************
In 1839, the nucleus of what would become Maryville was laid out when a group of men from around Missouritown decided to form a town. The men were inspired by the success of Nauvoo, Illinois, in which they had seen during their travels. They arrived at a place called "The Townsite" and began to build houses. By 1840, there were about 25 people living in Maryville. That year, the first school opened in Maryville with 8 students. In 1841, a Methodist church was built and soon afterward Methodists started teaching in the town. In 1845, a Presbyterian church was built and soon thereafter Presbyterians started teaching in the town as well. In 1849-1850, two mills were built within walking distance of each other in Maryville and quickly became very successful due to their exceptional water power. These mills allowed for increased production throughout the town and helped to create some of its earliest economic landmarks. In 1861-1862, Union forces invaded Missouritown and burned much of it including The Townsite which left about 50 people homeless (most notably John Hill). This event forever changed both Maryville's demographics and its economy however; most notably, after The Townsite fire many new homes were constructed on site rather than purchasing them from elsewhere as had been done before. Today's buildings date back to this time period!
