In 1876, Alfred Peabody began production of Hario brand coffee beans at his plantation near Maryland Heights. In 1898, J.B. Lippincott founded the National Coffee Company in St Louis with a warehouse and processing plant at Fourth and Poplar Streets. The company was so successful that it leased land adjacent to its original building on Seventh Street in 1904 and moved into new facilities on Ninth Street in 1908.

In 1837, the United States acquired what is now Missouri from Great Britain. The area was home to numerous Native American nations and was part of the Shawnee Nation. In 1836, President James K. Polk announced that the land would be split between two territories: Kansas and Nebraska. With no other offers available, Missouri Territory was created from portions of Kansas Territory. The area now known as Maryland Heights became a part of this new territory and soon after became an important center in the growth of St Louis County. The first homes in Maryland Heights were built by settlers who started arriving in droves in 1838. By 1840, there were over 100 families living in Maryland Heights. By 1845, many more residents had arrived including many members of the Methodist Church which helped grow the community into one of its most vibrant communities during this time period. As early as 1846, local businesses began opening up in Maryland Heights with grocery stores being among the earliest to open up shop. This led to a rapid increase in trade and commerce within the community which greatly benefited both locals and out-of-towners alike. One such business owner later recalled that “the early days [in Maryland Heights] were difficult but full of promise for economic progress here” because “trade brought people together so much that we formed a nucleus around which all our good work gradually grew” (Gordon). The growth of St Louis County continued to accelerate during this time period with many factories and businesses opening up throughout town due to its strategic location on routes linking St Louis with nearby towns and cities across America. This wealth generated great wealth for local citizens who often purchased property and developed it into luxurious estates which continue to remain popular today amongst those who live near them! A number of key events occurred during these years that have forever shaped Baltimore/StLouis County - these include: In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell entered Missouri Territory accompanied by his army seeking sanctuary from military service under Ulysses S Grant at Fort Donelson following their defeat at Pea Ridge Creek campaign; however, he quickly realized that he would not be able to escape justice if he remained living within Republican controlled Missouri Territories – so He retreating back eastward towards Baltimore on horseback until finally reaching Union lines at Pittsburg Landing on November 10th 1861 before turning himself into Ulysses S Grant just prior to his surrender (Harding). On February 14th 1865, Union General Simon Bolivar Buckner successfully stormed throughMaryland Heights Gatehouse while surrounded by Confederate forces resulting in Bloody Sunday when over 60 Confederate soldiers were killed before they could withdraw (Galloway). This event has been chronicled as one of history's seminal moments leading directlyto post-war stabilization efforts throughout Southern Illinois & Eastern Kentucky following Civil War - see also: "Bloody Sunday" article below ↑
In 1821, the area around present-day Maryland Heights was part of what is now St. Louis County. The first settler in this area was John Brown, who purchased land from the Lenape Native Americans in 1786. He built a cabin on what is now Maryland Heights and named it after his home state, Massachusetts. In 1827, Missouri Territory was created out of parts of Illinois and Missouri counties. The territory included much of the eastern side of St. Louis County, including present-day Maryland Heights. In 1829, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th President of the United States and soon after he made changes to U.S patent law that would impact technology companies such as Apple Inc., Google Inc., and Microsoft Corp.} In 1830, Robert Ewing became the first mayor of St. Louis County and later served as governor from 1840 to 1845; during his time as mayor he erected one of Saint Louis' first public buildings - an old courthouse at 5th Street and Olive Boulevard - which still stands today (though it has been remodeled several times). The late 19th century also saw a surge in development along Hagerstown Road in central St. Louis with businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Ford Motor Company, Kress Brothers Candy stores and others opening up shop across various blocks including 6th Street between Grand Boulevard and Washington Avenue NW; these businesses helped spur population growth in central St.Louis through increased commuting opportunities for workers within walking distance of their workplaces
