In 1812, a small town named Maryland Heights was established on the eastern bank of the Missouri River. The town was founded by Mdewa Kansa and his family, who arrived from what is now Kansas City, Missouri in 1811. The town prospered for many years, until it was destroyed in a fire in 1836. The town's remaining residents relocated to what is now Kansas City.
