Maryland Heights, Missouri is a town in Will County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The community began as a small farming village on the east side of theMissouri River in 1865 when two brothers founded what would become Maryland Heights. The name came from nearby Mount Vernon and its heights were characteristic for their smooth turf surface. In 1868, when railroads reached the area and transportation became more important, people began to move into Maryland Heights and other villages along the line. By 1910, there were over 1,000 people living in Maryland Heights. The first school opened in 1870 in what is now known as Church Street Elementary School. In 1916, Baltimore-based Myer Company built an indoor shopping mall which served as one of the first enclosed malls in America. Over time, many local businesses closed or merged with larger ones; however, some original small businesses remain such as Hooters restaurant and convenience store which are still open today despite changes in ownership multiple times since their inception. In 1978–79, a major fire destroyed most of downtown Maryland Heights after a summer heat wave caused extensive damage to buildings across Will County including Knob Hill Cemetery (now called Cemetery Hill Park). One year later (1979), residents voted to annex adjacent unincorporated areas making it easier to find water and sewer service while still maintaining town borders and limits on development within town limits through zoning ordinances that have been amended over time reflecting changing needs/intentions of those living within town boundaries post-fire restrictions/limitations on growth/development withintownlimits by those politically elected to provide services withintownlimits thru special taxing districts set up thru state statute governing municipal government & affairs

The first permanent settler in the area was John Reynolds, who arrived in 1785. The town of Maryland Heights was founded in 1810 by James Buchanan and his family. The town grew rapidly due to its location on a high hill and its access to transportation, including an Erie Canal. In 1838, the town became the capital of Missouri.
