Grant’s forces near Clarksville, Kentucky. Maryland Heights continues to play an important role in Missouri culture today. It is home to several major cultural institutions—including Eastern Illinois University–Carbondale (EIU- Carbondale), which offers undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as research opportunities; Stroudsburg Area Community College (Stroudsburg); and Montrose Christian School (Montrose)—and it is also where many people learn English language skills or start their careers outside of their homes.

Maryland Heights, Missouri is a small town in the state of Missouri. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of Johnson County. The community was founded in 1892 by families from Maryland and Virginia. It became a city in 1907 and lost its status as a municipality in 1997.
In 1811, the town of Maryland Heights was platted on the east side of the Missouri River. The town grew rapidly and by 1830, it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1834, the townsite was renamed Independence after the Declaration of Independence. In 1861, when Confederate forces occupied Missouri, Independence was one of several locales to be seized by Union forces. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1920 with a population of over 10,000 people. Since then, Independence has declined significantly and currently has a population of around 700 people.
