The Army National Guard in Maryland Heights, Missouri has been a part of the United States Armed Forces since 18 U.S.C. Section 921 requires that all units be mobilized for at least two weeks in case of war or insurrection and are mustered into service on a specific date by their governor or president. The unit was organized on October 2, 1861 as Company K, 4th Regiment Missouri Volunteer Infantry (later 3rd Regiment), as part of the Missouri State Militia under the command of Colonel John P. McCulloch. In 1903, Company B became Company G when it was reorganized from three companies into one battalion with Companies A-F becoming Companies H-J and K becoming Companies L-N. In 1917, Company F became Company I while Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion became Company M which later changed its name to the 1st Battalion (Heavy) Missouri National Guard in 1920 before being redesignated as the 1st Battalion (Airborne) Missouri National Guard in 1944. After World War II ended, there were no more state militias left in Missouri so on November 15, 1946 Unit 2nd Brigade Combat Team 1st Armored Division activated at Fort Leonard Wood MO and Detachment 8th Ordnance Squadron reactivated at Aberdeen Proving Ground MD under Commander Lt Col James Ellerbe who served until his retirement effective December 30, 1973 Then Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cramer assumed command effective January 1 1974 then Major General Leroy J. Walker on February 14 1978 assuming command until his retirement effective May 6 1980 Captain Donald Hemsley took over command effective June 30 1980 until his retirement effective September 17 1984 then Captain William Sweeny relieved him March 11 1985

When America gained independence, these men were pensioned off and given land in Maryland Heights, Missouri. The first African American soldier to serve in the United States Army was Pvt. Johnnie Cochran from Illinois who enlisted on December 15, 1942.
Maryland Heights is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that would become Maryland Heights was first settled by Europeans in 1797 as part of the Illinois Western Territory. In 1821, when Missouri became a state, Clay County was formed from parts of Johnson and Monterey Counties. The town of Maryland Heights began to be established in 1825 when settlers moved into what is now the eastern side of the square near where the post office used to be located. The first school in Maryland Heights was built on what is now called Park Avenue in 1829. A second school was built on Main Street in 1840 and it served as both schools until 1954 when it became known as Stonington Elementary School for girls. On July 1, 1870, Maryland Heights became a consolidated municipality with Springfield. In 1904, during World War I, much of rural Missouri passed to Federal Control through an act of Congress known as The Gilded Age Taxation Act (also known as The Browning-Harding Act). This act placed restrictions on local control and led to an increase in traffic congestion and lower tax revenues for states such as Missouri which were struggling financially during wartime times. As a result of this situation, Governor James Kapp called for amendments to the Missouri Constitution which would give more power to state governments rather than local authorities. Maryland Heights was one of the most influential and prosperous communities in Missouri. It developed as a small town on the east bank of the Missouri River, about 12 miles northeast of Kansas City. By 1892, Maryland Heights had a population of 5,000 people. In 1892, Maryland Heights became part of the newly formed city of Kansas City. The Village was quickly renamed to Maryland Heights after its residents donated land for that purpose. The name stuck and has been used ever since to identify what is now known as the eastern edge of downtown Kansas City. The early years were difficult for Maryland Heights because it was located on such a important trading route between St. Louis and Omaha, Nebraska. However, by 1906, when Kansas City became an incorporated city with its own government, business opportunities improved and growth began to rapiden in Maryland Heights. In 1912, the first high school in Missouri opened in Maryland Heights; it was called Central High School until 1959 when it changed its name to University Park High School after being bought by the university system of Kansas City (UPC). During World War II, many patriotic Americans contributed their time and resources to help build up Missouri's war effort. Many businesses closed due to wartime rationing but some managed to stay open thanks to their customers' patriotism and support for the war effort! A great example is Loring Aircraft which produced bombers during World War II while staying open while other companies closed down because they couldn't produce enough planes! In 1949 University Park High School became home to K-12 education for all students in GreaterKansasCity area including high schools within close distance from campus like Johnson County Community College and Truman State University - making this one of only a few schools in America that offers education at both lower elementary (K-4) level as well as higher educational institutions like universities/ Colleges (HIGH SCHOOL).
