All but one family died within five years after incorporation: Harry's father succumbed to pneumonia in 1875; John's mother died in 1886 during childbirth; Rachel's sister died shortly before she turned one year old in 1888; Anna Belle gave birth to her only child three years later but he also died young; Orville Oscar became involved with white women and married one in 1889 ; Sarah Jane moved out of town to marry a man from Poplar Bluff who opened a successful business there; Amos Jr.'s father passed away suddenly when he was just forty-four years old ; finally Rachel's mother succumbed to tuberculosis four months after incorporation when she was just twenty-one years old . In 1959, local physician Dr. Sidney Kaplan set up Memorial Hospital & Medical Center following his graduation from medical school at Tulane University Law School with honors. That hospital served as both primary care center for residents throughout northwest Missouri until it closed its doors in 1978 due to budget cuts made by then Governor Danforth Quayle amidst nationwide health care reform initiatives championed by President Jimmy Carter. The building that currently stands on I-435 between US 67/I-270 and US 68/I-635 serving as Memorial Hospital & Medical Center still stands vacant today despite numerous offers for purchase or leasecation over the past few decades . After World War II ended, Marshall saw an influx of veterans returning home who needed help getting back on their feet albeit often shortchanged financially because many had returned home too soon rather than waiting for benefits available once they left service .
