The National Guard of Marshall, Missouri was organized on November 1, 1907. The first unit was called the Yeomanry and it consisted of mounted militia troopers. The first real indication that the Guards would play a role in our local community came when World War I began. On September 3rd, 1914, the town dust off their old disbanded military units and put them to work cleaning up after the devastating war. This event is significant because it marked the beginning of what would be an illustrious history for the National Guard in Marshall. Over time, we have seen many changes to our organization includingactivation/deactivationof units (1946-1978), annexation of other towns withinMarshall County (1987), formation of joint task forces with neighboring counties (1996-present) and most recentlythe establishment of a Regional Command which oversees all National Guard activity throughoutMissouri Region

Marshall is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The name "Marshall" comes from Jesse Marshall who settled there in 1819 and built his house on the current site of Marshall University. The town was platted in 1852 by Wm. Hinton and James Denton as part of a larger plat for what would become Kansas City. A post office called Marshall was established in 1857, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1916. The first settler to arrive in what would become Marshall was Jesse Marshall who arrived on horseback from Illinois on November 3, 1819. He erected a log cabin on the site that now stands near present day Main Street and Chambers Avenue. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln made an address to a group of farmers gathered at what is now Union Park about thirty miles east ofKansas City about five miles east of where Marshall now stands: "I am come here today to urged you all to combine forces for the defense of our State against those invaders who are endeavoring to strip us bare." This speech has been variously interpreted as an endorsement or disapproval of slavery but most historians believe that Lincoln actually spoke at this location because he had heard about an impending attack by Confederate troops on Union-held territory just outside Kansas City
The United States National Guard was created on Sept. 16, 1792, after the Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War. The National Guard was originally a militia arm of the state governments in the Union. In 1866, it became an independent service and began raising money for military purposes through annual appropriation bills. The first national guard regiment was raised on July 4, 1861, in West Virginia. On December 14th, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill creating three regiments of artillery with headquarters at Fortress Monroe in Virginia Beach; these two brigades were redesignated as divisions on January 1st 1865. On July 15th 1863, President Andrew Johnson ordered all fifty states to raise one hundred thousand men for service in the Union army as part of “the great Northwestern Rebellion” (of which more later). On February 24th 1865, General George Meade issued orders disbanding all Ulysses S Grant’s old army and ordering all volunteers to report to their respective units by March 1st. This order caused some confusion as many men thought they were still required to serve under Grant. The following day Congress passed a joint resolution designating April Fool’s Day as “National Guard Day” in honor of this event. In 1895 Congress authorized the creation of five ranger battalions within each state militia division and also authorized the organization of six rifle companies within each infantry battalion (this last authorization being repealed in 1912). With these changes came increased combat power for both state militias and their federally organized counterparts – something that had been missing since before World War I when most professional American forces had been disbanded due to peacetime limitations set by congressional appropriators rather than Army commanders who could field larger numbers more efficiently using available resourcesPSIWI) . With ratification of the National Defense Act Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 93-465), Article 9 Section 2 provided that Selected Reserve troops must be used “in time of peace or war for activities which may include training with or deployment overseas against any nation or group thereof [emphasis added] . . . subject to recall without pay or other benefits if found not meeting those requirements” These provisions remain operative today although there is no specific call for mobilizing them during wartime absent notice from Congress or Presidential Executive Order

The name Marshall may be derived from the Shawnee word mahal (place), meaning "a strategic position." The first settler in what would become Marshall was John Armstrong who arrived in 1803. He built a cabin on an old swamp and named it Armstrong Station which he operated for several years before moving to what is now known as's Towne Center near where Interstate 55 and I-70 cross each other. In 1827, Marshall pioneer Moses Taylor settled in what became Marshall and founded a gristmill which remain operational to this day. In 1830, another pioneer, Elijah Woods also settled in what would become Marshall and began operations of a sawmill which still stands today production wise according to its website located at www.mosesTaylorstuffingmillsincorporated.com/. The Village of Marshall was organized on April 26, 1837 by order of Mayor Prentice Mulford with one store/grist mill/thouse being the first building erected within its limits according to History Kansas City Incorporated - A history of post-Civil War Missouri p 348-349 (1957). On July 1st 1840 four more stores were added making total ten businesses locate within present dayMarshall boundaries: four stores by Elijah Woods & Son (1830), three stores by Solomon Gray & Sons (1840), two stores by James Wetherbee & Sons (1850). One blacksmith shop remained open until about 1880 when it closed because of economics reasons; as Population increased Goods prices decreased during that time period…..At this time there were only 3 or 4 families employed in agriculture working small gardens raised chickens etc., leaving home made items such as saddles and bridles upholstered with cedar shavings rather than new leather products……Today we have over 20 years experience manufacturing saddles Whether they are used commercially or just for personal use…………….
Marshall was organized in 1837 as a town by the Illinois Central Railroad. The city was named for General James K. Marshall, who had commanded the Union forces during the American Civil War. When the railroad company went bankrupt in 1871, Marshall's citizens voted to rename the city to Kansas City.
