Marshall is a town in Phelps County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rolla–Donna Valley micropolitan area. The town was founded in 1836 by Captain John Marshall and his family. The first post office was established in Marshall in 1837. The town was renamed Donnahy in 1868 after General William Tecumseh Sherman's wife, Donna Hallett de la Garde Sherman. In 1903, the Texas Panhandle Railroad built a line from Rolla to Marshall which changed the name of the town to that of the railroad company's primary station. In 1916, a new school was built and named for Reverend James Boggs. The original courthouse building burned down on December 6, 1936 and all but three of its items were destroyed; this left only one room remaining standing which served as the storehouses for local businesses until it too burned down on November 5th of that year. A new courthouse was erected on Main Street in 1957 and still stands today. The first post office operated from October 9th 1830 until May 4th 1861 when it moved to Carthage due to postal regulations at that time requiring larger towns to have their own postmasters instead of using county commanders who reported directly to Territorial Governor David Dixon.[1]
