After the war, he moved to Marshalltown, Iowa where he founded a flour mill and taught school before returning to Missouri to become an officer in the United States Army under Ulysses S. Grant's supervision during Reconstruction. He died in 1886 after serving two terms as mayor of Marshalltown.
