Marshall is a small town in northwestern Missouri, United States. It was named after General James K. Polk, who served as the 27th President of the United States (1848-1853). The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Marshall was French explorer Pierre Charles de Lacrosse on July 3, 1764. He named it Pointe aux Meadows because of the many meadows he found there. The first permanent settler in Marshall was Nicholas Hildebrandt in 1811. A post office called Marshallsville had been established in 1827, but it failed to take hold and was discontinued in 1829. In 1861, Confederate forces under General Sterling Price destroyed a wagon train travelling from St Louis to Hannibal with goods needed for wartime purposes. This event became known as the 1862 Missouri Raid and caused great damage to Union interests in that state. Marshal residents defended their town even when their Federal compatriots were retreating northward. Marshall was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers who left the then- prospering town of Snohomish, Washington. The town was named for General James Marshall, the first United States marshal. It also served as the county seat for later parts of Jefferson and St. Francois counties until 1932. In 1906, Congress passed an act annexing Kearney County to Jackson County and renamed it "Marshall" in honor of General Marshall. The city is located on the eastern edge of Jackson County and is bordered by Kearney County to the north and east, Linn County to the south, and Columbia Countyswest edge is within Missouri State University's campus boundaries.
