Marshall is a small town in central Missouri, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The Marshall community was founded in 1839 by General James K. Polk and his wife Julia Childs Polk on their farm "Foley". The name derives from the creek that ran through the village and drained into Big Creek south of it. Big Creek rise above the present-day town line and flows east to west near Interstate 70 before emptying into Ball State University's Little Rock River near Interstate 64 (with which Marshall shares an exit). According to the US Census Bureau, Marshall has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,502 people, 1,898 households, and 1,242 families residing in the town. Marshall was a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. It is located on the east bank of the river Atchison, about 9 miles (14 km) south-southwest of Topeka. In 1821, it became part of what would become Kansas Territory. The first settler in Marshall was Alexander McMillan, who arrived in 1820 from Virginia. A store and post office were established there in 1824 by John Fenton and James Waddell. The first school for white children was built in 1826 by Mrs. Anna Beattie; it was renamed Marshall Academy in 1840 when that town became state capital at Lawrence near Topeka. In 1870, the population of Marshall totaled 375; it declined to 234 by 1890. In 1907, Marshall merged with nearby Pottawatomie City to form Wichita Falls City Schools District No. 2; this merger also affected neighboring towns such as Mission and Odessa which later joined the district as well. The last public school closed at the end of World War II; all current students are now sent to Wichita Falls High School which opened in 1951 after being rebuilt following a tornado damage effort led by then-Mayor Harry Sizemore who had been born and raised thereabouts In 1949, Wallace Wade McCullah bought land adjacent to downtown Marshall from Jens Weidner for $1 million

A small town called "New Market" sprang up about mile (1 km) east of present-day Marshall on the old Union Pacific Railroad line. New Market was abandoned when that railroad closed down in 1923. In 1825, a group of men led by Captain John Sibley founded a town located near modern day Springfield on land donated by Pierre Cline. The town name derived from Frenchmeaning "place where crows build their nests." Sibley renamed his new community "Marshall" after General James K. Marshall who had fought during the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Texas
