Marshall, Missouri is a small town located in eastern St. Louis County, Missouri. The population was 1,512 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield-Olathe-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Marshall goes back to 1820 when it was organized as a place called "Acre" on what is now the east side of Marshall County. After being named for General Andrew Jackson, the town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of 2,000 people. In 1836, Marshall became the Seat of government for all St. Louis County and was renamed "Marshall". In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union forces attacked Confederate troops near present day Marshall and destroyed most of the town's buildings; however most citizens were able to flee before capture or destruction could take place. In 1865, after Missouri had become a Confederate state, Marshal rejoined Union lines but remained under Confederate control until May 9th 1870 when it finally surrendered unconditionally to Union forces without any battle taking place. On that date Reconstruction began in America and Marshall became one of many towns in rural Missouri to lose its status as an established community and be reduced to poverty due to changes brought about by Reconstruction policies which favored white over black residents. However little change took place in Marshalls economy until after World War II when agriculture became more important than ever as a source of income for local farmers and businesses.
