Polk and his fellow officers of the U.S. Exploring Expedition, which explored the area now known as Missouri. Liberty was also named for General Lafayette, who fought in the French and Indian War and then served as an army general during the American Revolution. In 1835, Liberty's first store owner was Isaac Noland, who advertised goods such as flour, bacon, butter, eggs, coffee beans and other items to travelers on horseback or on foot from Illinois through Kansas City and St Louis. The town grew rapidly because of its location at a crossroads where travelers could trade goods with settlers living near both Kansas City and Springfield. In addition to its merchant class (who were mostly farmers), Liberty also attracted some professionals: lawyers John Prentiss and George Catlett were among its first residents. Although much of what is now Liberty had been settled before Polk's expedition arrived, development continued quickly due to increased demand for law services from those living near both cities. In 1840, Liberty became one of three towns within miles of each other in what is now east-central Missouri when Nelson County was formed; this gave it more access to education and businesses than most towns located closer to larger cities such as Topeka or Jefferson City.* * Development along Interstate 44 helped Liberty grow even faster; by 1850 it had become one of only two towns in county that did not experience population decline between 1840-1860 despite growth rates over 100%!
