Liberty was a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 556 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-St Louis metropolitan area. The first settler in Liberty was James Kapp, who arrived in 1824. Kapp and his family were the only white people to live there until about 1830 when four more settlers arrived: George Valentine, John Dickey, Jesse French and Peter Gentry. In 1837, Alexander McKay came to Liberty from Phelps County with his family and laid out a platted town on what is now Main Street. The townspeople built their homes between 1840 and 1843 using logs that they had brought over from Arkansas. In 1846, three men named William Henson (brother of Methodist preacher Amos Henson), Isaac Holmes (a lawyer) and Elijah Winters started a store in what is now downtown Liberty and soon began trading goods with other nearby towns. They sold whiskey for two cents per gallon to traffic on the main street which then became known as "Henson's Corners." By 1850, Liberty had a post office, schoolhouse and tavern; one of its citizens was elected as mayor pro tempore of Clay County. In 1861–1862 the Union Army occupied Liberty during the American Civil War; many residents fled or were driven out by Confederate forces while others chose to fight against their own country rather than support an opponent they considered unjust. After the war ended in 1865, most of Liberty's residents returned home; however, some remained behind to start new businesses such as clothing stores or gristmills near Union Station before returning home around 1874. The last resident left in 1897 when all but one building collapsed due to severe hail damage caused by a severe thunderstorm that week; no one was ever found alive inside any of those buildings again until 2007 when workers cleaning up old bricks discovered five human remains inside one such building.] It wasn't until 1918 that property values began increasing significantly enough for a group of businessmen led by millionaire general Electric Mogul Harry Chandler to buy much of what is now downtown Liberty from its original developer for $1 million dollars ().
