MILITARY GIVEN GIFTS TO THE PEOPLE OF LIBERTY, MISSOURI Since the Revolutionary War, Liberty has been a hotbed of activity for the military and their friends. The city was founded on a small island in the Missouri River, and it is no wonder that there are so many Military installations in town. In 1812, General James Hogg sent his forces to take control of the city from Native Americans. This event marked one of the earliest instances of military gifts to civilians in Liberty. As part of a larger gift to Independence Hall, General Hogg gave five cannons, four rifles and two pistols to Mayor John Marshall. The weapons were used during the American Revolution and will still be seen today as relics of history. In 1861, when Confederate soldiers invaded Missouri, Liberty became an important hub for supplies and support throughout the state. The city was also home to several military installations including Fort Donelson which housed cannons used against Union troops. It was here that Confederate Lieutenant Colonel David Dixon gave Lt Governor Andrew Johnson a rifle as a gift. The rifle was later used against Union troops at Vicksburg while Johnson was president. After the Civil War ended, many buildings in Liberty were renovated or replaced by new ones including Fort Donelson’s brick bastion which now houses apartments above ground level. It is interesting to note that even after all these years, parts of Fort Donelson remain unused and accessible only through tours! In 1865-1866,, local militia units helped suppress a slave insurrection within Confederate territory in St Louis County before returning home – an event which has been immortalized by graffiti artists around town! Over time various businesses have moved into downtownLiberty making it more difficult for visitors to get close enoughto see some truly amazing artifacts! But overall there is little doubt that Liberty has been host to significant events over its long history!

The town was founded in 1837 by James A. Bellefontaine and his family as a stop on the travel route from Independence to Topeka. The first post office was established in 1839, and the first store opened in 1840. When Kansas became an independent country in 1846, Liberty became its capital and remained so until 1861 when Jefferson City became the new capital of Missouri. In 1865, Liberty celebrated its centennial with a parade and festival that included races and exhibitions of agricultural products from local farmers. In 1904, Liberty had its own electric streetlight system which continued until it was replaced by KMC's current system in 1938. When KMC acquired the property underlying Liberty Station (now Alex Haley Park) in 1969, they began preparations for development which ultimately led to their purchase of much of Howard County including Libertyville and surrounding communities during the early 1970s-1980s boom period known as "the revival." This period saw many new businesses open up including restaurants such as Jack Daniels' steakhouse and Motel 6; retail stores such as Cabela's;and two hospitals - St Joseph's Hospital Medical Center (founded 1912) and Mercy Health Medical Center (founded 1968). Today liberty has become one of KCMO's most popular tourist destinations due to its diverse cultural attractions including art galleries throughout downtown; historical sites such as Bellefontaine House where President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address; outdoor activities like hiking or biking along riverfront trails or taking tours through historic homes; special events like summer festivals or Fourth of July fireworks shows
Liberty, Missouri was created in 1821 and is the most recent county to be organized in the state of Missouri. The first settlers arrived in what is now Liberty County in 1819, and it was initially named for James K. Polk, then-President of the United States.
