In 1857, when slavery was abolished in Illinois, two men from Liberty went to Springfield to petition for an ordinance abolishing slavery there as well. This led to the first successful anti-slavery campaign in America. In 1861, when Missouri seceded from Unionism and became Confederate Territory (except for parts west of Memphis), Liberty sided with its Confederate counterpart; however, this did not affect its status as one of America's most vibrant cities during Reconstruction era (1865-1877). After Reconstruction ended, many black Americans settled in Liberty while whites left for other places around Missouri due to racism against non-white communities. However, recent arrivals have helped revive downtown businesses along with adding more diversity to local neighborhoods. Today Liberty remains an important cultural center for the region and has become known for its arts scene as well as its support for free speech rights and open inquiry. Liberty was a small town in the central US state of Missouri before the American Civil War. It is now a ghost town, and no one knows why. The town had a population of around 100 people in 1860, but by 1870 it had shrunk to just 10. There were two reasons for this: Liberty was located on the border of Confederate territory, and because many of its residents chose to secede from Missouri during the war. Liberty never recovered from the war. In 1865, only three people lived there still – all men who had decided to stay after the Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House. By 1871, only a handful of buildings remained standing, and all those remaining citizens had moved away or died out. The community ceased to exist entirely within 25 years. Liberty is one of several towns in central Missouri that have disappeared completely since the end of slavery in 1865. Other examples include Poplar Bluff and Gentryville also vanished after emancipation; Greencastle lost its post officeactivities as well after 1861; Hillsboro went out of business in 1875; and Independence went extinct following Reconstruction in 1877. These towns may have been abandoned due to factors such as economic decline or environmental problems - but there is no evidence that they were deliberately destroyed by their respective populations..
Liberty was a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. It was platted on December 16, 1836, by General James K. Polk and Dr. George B. McClellan as the future town of Liberty Township. The first post office in Liberty opened on January 1, 1840. The name of the town was changed to Liberty on February 17, 1845, during the Mexican–American War following an American victory at the Battle of Monterrey over Mexico's forces led by Gen Francisco Meade. The town was destroyed by a fire on October 21, 1854; it had been growing rapidly since its incorporation and had not received enough attention from the government to prevent it from becoming an overcrowded smalltown with no streetlights or public transportation. In 1865-1866 Liberty burned again due to faulty construction; this time only a few homes were lost and most of the buildings were rebuilt using local lumber which made them completely immune to fire again for nearly 50 years until a fire destroyed them all once more in 2006. In early 2007 plans were announced for redevelopment of what is now part of downtown Liberty - including new housing developments and retail space - after several years of neglect caused by budget cuts within city hall. On November 3rd 2007 they held their groundbreaking ceremonies for what would become known as "The Square" - designed to be bothulturey downtown into one contiguous area that would offer more activities than just shopping and dining options. The square officially opened on April 12th 2009 with events such as art exhibitions, concerts and business meetings taking place there throughout the year.
