By 1850 Liberty had a population of over 1,000 people and was considered to be one of the most isolated American towns. In 1861 Liberty was annexed by Kansas City, Missouri. However, because Lincoln wanted to maintain control over slave states that seceded from the Union, he refused to allow Liberty to become part of Kansas City. The town continued to exist as an unincorporated community until it was merged into the city of Kansas City in 1963. Today Liberty is home to a museum commemorating its history and culture.
