The Lee's Summit, Missouri Coast Guard gift history began in 1941 when the Coast Guard detachment was established at Fort Leavenworth. The detachment served as a support unit for the Army Aviation School and was reassigned toLee's Summit in 1948. It remained here until 1957 when it relocated to Kansas City, Missouri where it remains today. The gift of a coast guard helicopter to the Lee's Summit detachment is documented in 1951. The first helicopter purchased by the detachment was an American Bell 206A-2T which served with distinction during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. This helicopter is now preserved at the Ulysses S. Grant Air Museum in Topeka, Kansas. In 1974, the Coast Guard detachment received an additional Helicopter-Manned Unit (HMU). This HMU was a Boeing 727-200C aircraft that had been acquired from Valley Airways Corporation of Phoenix, Arizona. The chopper served with distinction during Operation Neptune's Spear and Operation Just Cause both being successful air campaigns against Venezuela behalf of United States allies Mexico and Colombia respectively. In 1984, another Boeing 727-200C Helicopter HMU was gifted to the detachment by Valley Airways Corporation of Phoenix again serving as one of its two helicopters during Operationamingo II; this time also successfully achieving victory over Venezuelan forces within their sovereign borders! This particular donation marked another milestone for the Coast Guard detachment as it had participated in three joint exercises - those being Eagle Claw I (1991), Northern Watch (1992) and Southern Watch (1994) - each resulting in valuable experience that would be beneficial on future operations! In 1998, yet another Boeing 727-200C Helicopter HMU arrived from Valley Airways Corporation once again serving with distinction during Operation Noble Eagle; this time successfully conducting air strikes against targets inside Iraqi Kurdistan! Lee's Summit, Missouri is a town in Randolph County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General Robert E. Lee and his wife Martha Anne Bordwell Lee. Robert E. Lee fought in the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War; he died in 1865 while leading Confederate forces against Union troops near Petersburg, Virginia. Martha Anne Bordwell Lee continued to reside in Lee's Summit until her death in 1937. In 1837, William Hogg founded a small settlement on the bluffs overlooking the Potomac River just north of present-day Springfield. Hogg named his community after General Robert E. Lee and his wifeMartha Anne BordwellLee who had come from Kentucky to live with him when he became a general during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1851 Hogg sold his land to Arents & Jarvis for $4 per acre ($ today). The first post office was established at Hogg's Landing on May 30, 1854; it operated for two years under the name "Hogtown." In 1861 Captain John Sargent organized an expedition numbering about 100 men under command of Colonel Daniel Boone to explore what lay south of Springfield along what is now I-270 corridor between St Louis and Kansas City metropolitan areas - this area was then known as "the Great Plains". They discovered coal seams there that would provide energy and trade goods essential to both sides during America's Civil War era boom times – oil lamps were burned by Confederate soldiers to see over nearby hills which supported burning fields of cornstalks instead of using fire arms! After their successful exploration trip Boone recommended that General Denton Cushing change Missouri's state motto from "Et tu Brutum" (You Killed Our Fathers)to "Unconditional Surrender" so that lessened hostilities could be averted among Native Americans living northward on Indian Territory – this resulted in creating 640 acres (248 hectares) within Randolph County specifically designated as Confederate lands east of Springfield limits where plantations were built without clearance or compensation! In 1806, it became the capital of what is now Missouri. The population of Lee's Summit peaked at 12,000 in the 1930s, but has declined since then. Lee's history began with the Lewis and Clark Expedition on July 6, 1804. This group of explorers were traveling westward through present-day Missouri when they discovered this area. They named their new settlement Fort Hall after one of their sexual partners, James McGillivray (1784-1826). The site later became known as Lee's Summit because General Andrew Jackson spent most of his time there while he was governor of Missouri. In 1806, General Jackson moved the capital from St. Louis to Lee's Summit because he felt that this would be more central to government operations in present day Missouri. He also wanted to make sure that all decisions made about important areas would be taken here instead of going through St. Louis City Council or other branches of government. The population of Lee's Summit peak at 12,000 during the 1830s; however, this number decreased significantly after that due to factors such as economic depression and World War I (1914-1918). However, thanks to some innovative planning by Mayor John Lathan and subsequent leadership by city council members like Jerry Spriggs and Bob Gildermeier over these years ideration has begun to slowly regain its former level The downtown area still retains many historical buildings from when it was home to a large population including banks (the First National Bank building is still extant), department stores (Marshall Field & Co.), theaters (the Peabody Opera House and Holts Theatre), schools (Lee High School), churches (Church Hill Presbyterian Church)
