The Lee's Summit Air Force Base gift history can trace back to the day that the base was first established. The United States Air Force organization, the Fourth Wing, was organized on December 15th, 1948. The wing was made up of two groups: the Military Auxiliary Unit (MAU) and the Tactical Aircraft Depot (TAD). In 1949, MAU #2 was activated at RAF Lakenheath in England as a unit of NATO's Allied Control Commission. MAU #2 provided logistical support for tactical aircraft operations in Europe. In 1951-1952, MAU #3 also arrived at RAF Lakenheath as a subordinate unit of NATO's Allied Command Europe. These organizations were responsible for operational security for strategic bombers operating over Western European airspace. On October 3rd, 1953, USAF Headquarters recognized AFHQ #1 with its first grant of $10K from the Defense Department Appropriations Act which supported research into air refueling technology and developmental nozzle development for F-100 Super Sabre fighters. This milestone event signaled an important change in USAF policy and signaled AFHQ's commitment to moving forward with advanced fighter refueling technologies. This investment would lead to future gifts from AFHQ such as: In 1957-1958, AFHQ received another $10K appropriation which funded research into concepts related to jet engine performance and jet propulsion systems development under Project Mercury – eventually leading to Lockheed Martin’s design proposal for an all-new jet engine architecture called Jena/Arai/F6E Tiger II (later known as Delta IV). In 1959-1960AFHQ received an additional appropriation totaling $20K which allowed them to begin construction on their new Research Laboratory Building (RLB), later designatedBuilding 740 within AFB LEE station boundaries today! This building would become one of the premier research institutions within USAF during the 1960s and 1970s! In 1963-1964AFHQ received another appropriation totaling $30K which authorized purchase of two Boeing 747 jets – again signaling significant progress towards advanced fighter refueling technologies! Upon receipt of these planes, AF HQ turned their attention towards programs associated with high altitude flying such as ground based radar operations or long range precision bombing missions! These projects would continue through 1976 when AFB LEE closed its doors forever after!!
Lee Summit, Missouri is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Lee Summit is located on the banks of theMissouri River. The land that became Lee Summit was first settled by French colonists in 1763. The town was founded in 1838 as a result of an Act of Congress and named for General James Hogg (1768-1834), then governor of Illinois Territory and later United States Secretary of War under President Andrew Johnson. Lee's Summit post office began operating in 1839, and remained open until it closed in 1954. In 1905 the train depot serving Lee's Summit was destroyed by fire; however, a new depot was built and continued to serve the community until it burned down in 1961. In 1911 local developers formed what would become known as "The National Coal Company" to develop coal resources near present-day Lee's Summit with hopes of commercially exploiting them However this project failed because there were no adequate transportation or storage facilities available to process coal crops near Springfield, Missouri which now neighbor Lee's Summit on the east side of the river
