A coffee history in Lebanon, Missouri began with the first coffeehouses in that town in 1847. The first coffee shop was called the Coffee House and it was owned by a man named John L. Smith. In 1848, another man named Elijah French opened a small grocery store, which served as the first post office in Lebanon. The Town of Lebanon had 1 jail and 3 churches when it incorporation into the state of Missouri on November 15, 1853. A few years later, on December 12, 1855, there was a fire that destroyed most of the businesses in downtown Beirut including Mr. French's store. However, due to his valiant effort to rebuild his business within a short amount of time he continued to operate until his death in 1865 at the age of 73 years old. By 1861 there were 10 cafes open throughout Beirut with an total population of about 50 people. The next year saw the opening of two more coffee shops- one called New Jerusalem Cafe and another called The Lion's Den Coffee House (later changed to The Star). By 1865 there were also 5 grocery stores operating within Beirut with a total population over 100 people! During this time period Lebanese Americans controlled most aspects of Lebanese society from commerce through education and politics while Europeans lived primarily outside of Beirut. This gave rise to some resentment towards these foreigners who were perceived as having taken advantage of their countrymen while they themselves struggled financially. It wasn't until World War II that Lebanese Americans finally regained control over their economy and culture while European refugees returned home after WWII

Lebanon, Missouri is a small town in northwest Missouri that was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804. The expedition was made up of American soldiers and officers, led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. The town was named after Mount Lebanon, in present-day Syria. Lebanon grew quickly due to the influx of immigrants from nearby Illinois during the mid-19th century. By 1900, the town had a population of around 200 people. In 1906, Lebanon became an incorporated village when it joined the city of St. Louis. At its peak, Lebanon had a population of about 471 people. However, because of population growth and increased competition for land and services from other municipalities within St. Louis County, Lebanon's economy began to decline beginning in the 1970s. In recent years, however, Beirut has begun to rebound as a center for arts and culture in Northwest Missouri. In addition to its own independent newspaper and radio station (KWTO), Beirut also has partnerships with local universities including Truman State University and Ozark Community College to provide educational opportunities for its citizens.
