The United States Air Force (USAF) is one of the largest and most diverse militaries in the world. It has over 169,000 active duty members and over 184,000 retirees. The USAF operates more than 120 bases worldwide, including 10 in Lebanon. In 1975, when Beirut was destroyed in a terrorist bombing, the USAF donated two C-130 Hercules transports to be used as airfields for Operation Wooden Leg. The operation helped protect Beirut from an impending terrorist attack. In 1986, when Saddam Hussein's Iraq invaded Kuwait, the USAF donated two KC-135 Stratotankers to fly search and rescue mission in support ofOperation Desert Storm. The planes flew for more than 5 hours each day during the war and were instrumental in saving many lives. Since then, the USAF has again contributed to Operation Northern Watch by donating four Boeing 727 aircrafts to be used as transport planes for humanitarian aid flights throughout Lebanon. These planes have flown missions such as transporting food supplies to villages near Mount Lebanon during wintertime or flying medical evacuations during natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes. In 2015, when nine US service members were killed after their helicopter crashed into a mountain range in Afghanistan while providing medical assistance, the USAF responded with three C-5 Galaxy jets that took off from RAF Fairford England and landed at Lebanese airports to provide medical evacuations and funeral services for US military personnel who had died in Afghanistan. Thiswas an unprecedented act by the USAF and demonstrated its commitment to helping allied forces fight against terrorism around the world.

Lebanon, Missouri is a small town located in the St. Louis metropolitan area. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the city of St. Louis and is bordered by Scott Road to the east, Peoria Avenue to the south, Lebanon Road to the west and Interstate 65 to the north. The town was founded in 1836 by Lebanese immigrants who had been driven out of their homes in Syria by martial law that followed World War I. The original settlers were farmers and their families. By 1910, about 60% of Beirut's residents were Lebanese-American citizens descended from those who arrived in 1836 or earlier. In 1961, when St. Louis became an independent city, Beirut became one of its wards and remained so until 1975 when it reverted back to its former ward status as part of St. Louis' annexation into Ferguson Township
The airforce gift history goes back to the early days of the USAF. The first Gift of Air Force was a rifle, given in 1924 to Major General Harry S. Truman, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1938, General Curtis LeMay gave a bomber to Lieutenant Colonel John A. Fritchey for his service as Commanding Officer, Bombardment Wing Four at Offutt AFB in Nebraska. In 1951, General Hoyt S. Vandenberg presented a Boeing B-47 Stratojet Bomber to Brigadier General James J. Gavin for his distinguished flying career in the USAF and many other achievements during World War II and later years as Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Air Forces (CINCPAC). In 1962 Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which provided that gifts from members of Congress be kept by the Department of Defense “for presentation or use by members or their staffs on behalf of any department or agency thereof” (7 U.S.C § 552). Since then there have been numerous gifts from members of Congress including helicopters and fighter jets which are now part of the air force inventory.- Aircraft Gifts: There has been an almost constant flow of aircraft gifts over time from member organizations within the USAF through donations and purchases made by military officers and civilians alike wishing to show their support for aviation within our country’s defense system. Many other notable individuals throughout history have contributed financially or emotionally towards support programs within our military establishment through aviation donation including Presidential Medal Of Freedom recipient Rear Admiral George Cushman who donated an airplane restoration project along Interstate 95 near Portland OR; First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt receiving her own P-51 Mustang fighter jet while she was living at Naval Air Station Key West, FL;and Congressman Don Edwards (D – CA)with a Beechcraft Baroness transport plane!

Lebanon, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of central Missouri. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Joseph metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1857 as a small settlement on an east-west wagon road between Lebanon and Moberly. In 1871, it became organized as a village after it was accepted into the Union County School District. In 1902, it became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and council. Its name honors Colonel Samuel Lyon (1819-1900), who served as military governor of Missouri during the War for Independence and later served as postmaster general of Missouri under President William McKinley. The first settlers to Lebanon were Methodist missionaries from Ohio who arrived in 1830. They built their first cabin in 1836 and named their community after Mount Lebanon in Philadelphia while they were on a missionary visit to that city. A second group of missionaries arrived in 1839 and named their settlement after Carthage, Tennessee because they had heard that there was land available there for pioneer settlement. The namesakes’ home until 1850 when General James Kellar purchased land adjacent to present-day Lebanon and renamed it Kellarville after himself and his regiment which had fought at Vicksburg during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Afterward, most residents continued to call their village Beirut because that is where Colonel Lyon had located his original cabin from which he developed Lebanon into one of pioneer America’s largest settlements by 1840 with over 300 people living there including 50 farmers, 25 mechanics, 10 attorneys, 5 blacksmiths/penniesmiths, 2 surveyors/clerkmen/pageants promoters etc.). In 1881 when Linn County was established within Union County following the Kansas–Nebraska Act which repealed Iowa Territory’s anti- Territorial voting law passed two years earlier by concurrent resolutions of both houses of Congress consequent upon Ulysses S Grant’s successful reelection as president on November 3rd year anniversary of his inauguration only two days earlier than he took office having been sworn in on October 25th birthday less than two weeks before proceedings began formalizing Kansas Territory boundaries thereby creating much controversy among contemporaries about whether or not he should have been allowed to serve more than one term) Beirut became an unincorporated part of Linn County making its political history concurrent with other nearby communities such as Camden Village (established 1865), Hillsboro (founded 1870), Arabella (founded 1881), Prospect Heights (founded 1886) all also incorporated municipalities having local government but without representation on county level like Beirut did until 1911 when then Municipal Judge John Gentry appointed three members – Mayor Addie Hargrave; Treasurer Harry Weems; Clerk Elsie Hargrave – each responsible for satisfying all needs such as fire prevention; Streets & Roads; Sewers & Drainage etc.; pursuant to Organic Act No 1187 passed by City Council December 12th 1911 providing for incorporation thereof into Jackson Township effective January 1st 1912 thereby becoming fully vested with municipal powers hereinunder notwithstanding occurrence since then prior thereto whenever any question may be raised relative thereto by resolution or vote thereof by City Council duly convened either at its meeting or special session according to law). This process eventually led directly to annexation by neighboring townships including Joplin Township resulting in today's total population size for Lebanese resident citizens numbering 2,814 however annexed properties currently comprising just over 56% ($2 million+) remaining undeveloped despite requests made jointly by city officials & developers thru variousowntown marketing efforts coupled with occasional open house events featuring contemporary architecture designed specifically for this burgeoning enclave); although annexation has resulted primarily from suburban development patterns rather than annexation requests from inner city residents seeking equal access along I-55 corridor due principally to lack OFDOT funding prioritiesrelative nonetheless recent trend indicating growing demand emanating increasingly FROMINTERNATIONAL BUSINESSES FOR LOCAL AREA REALTIME SPEED ACCESS NOT CONTAINING ANY ADMINISTRATIVE FUNDS PRESENTLY PROVIDING THAT LOTS PROPERTY ON THE I-55 corridor INCLUDE MUCH OF WHAT IS NOW LEBANON WITHIN SAYING CITY LIMITS - AN ISSUE WE WILL CONSIDER REVIEWING WITH RESPECT TO ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENERS OR TOWNSHIP GOVERNMENT AUTHORITY SHOULD THAT DEMAND BE ASSOCIATED WITH EVER EXPANSION OF INVESTMENTS IN THE AREA)).
