Kirkwood, Missouri is a town located in central Missouri. The community was founded in 1836, and has been continuously inhabited since then. It is currently the smallest municipality in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The town was originally named for Captain Kirkwood, an early settler on the east side of the Missouri River. In 1837, Captain Kirkwood's wife died while he was away at war with Mexico. She was buried in nearby Emporia and her remains were later moved to Kirkwood to be interred beside her husband. During the American Civil War, skirmishes took place near Kirkwood between Union and Confederate forces. One such battle occurred on October 12, 1861 when Confederate General James Longstreet attacked Union forces under General John Custer near Emporia Crossroads. After some skirmishing, both sides came to a truce and returned to their respective camps; however, this event would become known as the Battle of Kirkwood because of it proximity to the town center. After the war ended, many new settlers arrived in Kirkwood- among them were my grandfather (1907-2001) who first settled there in 1937 and my grandmother (1910-1982) who moved from St Louis County minutes after they were married. They brought with them their love of music and art which would soon be expressed through their various businesses including The Chocolate Factory located adjacent to our home for over fifty years! The post office opened at 8am on November 1st, 1836 by Orville Baird with just three letters: KIWKHNU-. This small outpost served much like today's USPS service - delivering mail reliably between towns throughout central Mo., until 1978 when MOPS became available statewide - providing much needed competition for local postmasters! In 1840 Representative Cowles sent a bill into Congress proposing that all future settlements within twelve miles of Hannibal should have a store built within one year and mail delivered thereto; this bill failed but Representative Cowles' persistence paid off as by 1845 more than 60 stores had been erected along US 67 south of Hannibal! Today we still enjoy regular mail deliveries from Hannibal - courtesy of MOPS!
