The Archer Manufacturing Company was founded there in 1881 and continues to produce firearms today. In 1903, one of its founders, Wm. H. At that time, Kirkwood also had the first rifle range in the United States. Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 3,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The town was named for Captain Kirkwood, an American Revolutionary War veteran and brigadier general who fought in land battles in what is now Missouri and Illinois. The first settler in Kirkwood was James Hays, who arrived in 1819. By 1830, there were 10 settlers living here. Kirkwood was incorporated as a village on March 12, 1854. On December 8 of that year, it became a town when it voted to become one from portions of Callaway and Woodbury townships. In 1860-1861, during the American Civil War, Kirkwood furnished soldiers for General Robert Ewing's army in northern Illinois; these men are honored with the name "Kirkwood Volunteers". In 1865-1966 (the last years of slavery), Kirkwood served as capital of Randolph County under Governor John Evans (D). The first black public servant in Missouri had been hired here by then-Governor Cyrus Vance (R) to serve as justice of the peace; he appointed Harriet Tubman to this position after she had won passage through Confederate lines on her Underground Railroad journey from slavery to freedom in New York City. After Vance's death at age 64 on May 24, 1966 – just three months before his inauguration as governor – Tubman resigned from her post to move back home to Ebenezer Baptist Church so she could take care of him full time instead of continuing on a personal campaign against white supremacy up until then which she considered successful given that most whites still saw her as an emancipated woman rather than an Easterner like many others wanted them seen). Five days after taking office, Governor Evans called for a special session within hours after receiving word from President Lyndon Johnson that he would not seek reelection because he didn't think Johnson could win re-election without running beside him During his term as governor various businesses closed due largely to state budget cuts enacted during his tenure including: First National Bank (now BB&T), Great Western Coal Mine Co., Republic Steel Workshops Inc., Kirkshire Glass Company (now KGC Industries), GEO Group USA Inc., Jarden Corporation and numerous other small businesses across the state which made life difficult for residents while also reducing tax revenue which hiked prices on goods statewide by 6%. The first post office was established in 1837. In 1861, the Union military surrendered at Reidsville, Kentucky, and Kirkwood became part of the newly formed Confederate States of America. The town remained loyal to the Confederacy until 1865 when it joined the Union side. By 1870, Kirkwood had a population of 400 residents and it had two schools - one for boys and one for girls. By 1900, the population had grown to 1,500 people and there were six businesses in Kirkwood. In 1923, Kirdworth High School opened and it remains the only high school in town today.
