Kirkwood is a small town located in the Ozarks of Missouri. The population was 5,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-based city of Springfield and is about 20 miles northwest of the larger Kansas City metropolitan area. The surrounding countryside includes several lakes and forests. The first people to live in Kirkwood were local hunters who hunted game around present day Springdale and Lebanon hills. They also gathered acorns from the trees for fuel and built their homes from logs that they dragged over snow drifts. In 1812, a man by the name of John Kirkwood married Rachel Sprague, daughter of David Sprague, one of the early settlers in this area. Rachel's father had come to this region with his family in 1798 as part of what was known as The Missouri Coaxial Expedition under General James Kansa. After landing on nearby Blackwell Island (now called Clearwater) he traveled northward until he reached what is now Springdale where he erected an sawmill and trading post on May 1, 1812. Over time other pioneers arrived in Kirkwood including merchants Isaac Fleetham and Samuel Steele; farmers Elijah Crouch, Josiah Howells, Solomon Palfrey; mechanics Ebenezer Whitehurst, Peter Smith; surveyors George Stephenson and Richard Mound – all men who had worked on surveys sent out by President James Kansa to identify potential land grants for various Indian tribes living near Kansas City at that time. In 1835 two brothers named Gideon Greenfield came from Illinois to start an agricultural business hereabouts which soon grew into a large enterprise providing hay bales (later used for paper), flour products etc., with grain exports going along side it becoming increasingly important during the depression years when demand for goods increased domestically but decreased abroad due to currency devaluation caused by gold coins being demonetized internationally following The Civil War ended in 1865). Gideon's wife Fanny died childless while he continued running his business until his death at age 90 in 1903 followed by his son Harold Giddens Greenfield who ran things until 1951 when it was acquired by Archer Daniels Midland Company having been founded there back then as Waco Grain & Feed company - later still renamed Archer Daniels Midland Company again - making it one of America's largest agriculture companies ever!

Kirkwood, Missouri is a town in Dixon County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Highland, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1849 by Captain James Kirkwood and his family. The first known settler in Kirkwood was Captain James Kirkwood and his family who came from County Down in Ireland in 1849. They were the first Europeans to live in Dixon County and they built a cabin on the east side of present day Market Street near what is now Palmer Park. In 1850, Captain Kirkwood married Sarah Jane Mahoney and they started a farm southeast of town on Ladds Road which became known as Mahoney's Landing. In 1851, Reverend John Day set up a Presbyterian church within one mile (1 km) of today's town center and he named it Kirkwood after himself and Captain Kirkwood's home country where he had been born. On January 8th, 1852 Reverend Day baptized 10 children at the church including Sarah Jane Mahoney’s firstborn son John Baily who would later become captaincanon Kirkwood Jr.). In 1853, Lt.Colonel Nathaniel Lyon bought land northwest of town from Majestic Land Company for $600 which he donated to the county seat project moving people away from then called "Prairie View". He also donated 4 acres (16 ha) to be used as a park with an area that measures approximately . Colonel Lyon served as chairman of the county commission which designed and built the courthouse building still standing today on Park Avenue adjacent to Old Town Hall Museum Suite A – originalbuilt1854-55). He died suddenly before completion of this project leaving his land undetermined but it is thought that he may have given it to Dixon County for use as its new county seat should Springfield not have been established until after his death when settlers began arriving from Illinois Territory seeking exemption from Kansas' admission into the Union because their territory included what is now Dixon County! There are several theories about this particular donation but no definitive evidence exists to support any specific theory however it does make for interesting trivia about our local history! Lieutenant Colonel Lyon also left behind many descendants who continue to reside in Dixon County today including: Captains James Acheson (USN), Nathanial Lyon II (USMC), Drayson Ketchum (Dixon Medical College Professor Emeritus), David Ritchie (USAFA Commander - Afghanistan Campaign 2009-10) among others
Kirkwood was founded in 1838 by John Kirkwood. The town was named for John's father, who had purchased the land in 1825. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, and soon became a major center for trade and commerce. By 1860, Kirkwood had reached its peak as a commercial center, with a population of over 1,000 people. In that year, the town was destroyed by fire, which left it largely unharmed. Over the ensuing decades, however, Kirkwood slowly declined in popularity until it disappeared from the map completely in 1970.
