Kirkwood, MO is a city in and the county seat of Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. The city is located near St. Louis on the border of Missouri and Illinois. The first coffee beans were grown in this area in 1857 by Christopher Lloyd and others. In 1868, George Peabody organized a business to import Java beans from Indonesia for use in his restaurants in Springfield, Illinois. This was one of the first successful coffee businesses outside of California or Europe. In 1869-70 Jesse Barnes started to roast coffee at his home on Union Street just east of town center. By 1870 he had opened a small grocery store next door to Barnes & Company which became known as "the heart of Kirkwood." From here he began buying land adjacent to what is now Kirkwood Elementary School and began building what would become the original brick schoolhouse on Main Street in 1872 (now called Old Main). In 1893 Colonel John Cline bought 323 acres (134 hectares) northeast of town along US Route 506 for $1 million dollars which included a large slough that served as an irrigation ditch for growing corn and other crops. He built Cline's Coffee Estate which still stands today on this site across from Central High School northwest of town center. This was one of the largest single purchases ever made by American farmers during the late 19th century! This purchase also considerably increased KCNC's size from about 10 acres (4 ha) to over 200 acres (80 ha). It should be noted that these early buyers did not place much emphasis on quality - they wanted an outlet into larger markets where they could sell their product at lower prices than those found back East! Cline soon realized that he needed more space so he sold most or all his holdings inKCNC within a few years after its establishment! Today there are several dozen small farms producing high-quality European-grown coffee near Kirkwood including some owned by friends and family members of original buyers/sellers Menotti & Sons; D'Angelo Coffee Co.; Dutch Bros., Inc.; Greenway Coffee Co.; Hagerman Farms; etc.). The only built up portions remaining today are around New Fenton which consists mostly of single-family homes dating back to around 1960s with some being much older still; Coralville where there are a few scattered businesses including an auto dealership/repair shop; Manchester which also contains a few businesses but mainly functions as a small village serving its own residents who live near each other on primary roads or buses into town for shopping or services such as banking or health care; and finally section 25 Northfork Township which surrounds part but does not include all of what used to be known as that township along with sections 26 South Fork Township which were annexed by Kirkwood in 1896 from parts of Coralville Township due to their close proximity to each other on two main routes: Ulysses S Grant Boulevard and Interstate 70
The first settlers in Kirkwood, Missouri were James and Nancy Kirkwood. In 1821, John Cline purchased a homestead in the area which became Kirkwood. He built a log cabin and named it "Cline's Post". The first school was built in Kirkwood in 1827. In 1830, the town of Kirkwood was organized with nine residents. The first post office was opened in 1830 by Mr. Fenton and Mrs. Cline. A two-story frame building replaced the original structure in 1831. It was used as the civic center until 1861 when it burned down due to a fire that started from an open coal mine near by. A new two-story frame building was erected in 1871 and served as the town hall until 1924 when it also burned down due to a fire.
