Kirkwood, Missouri is an unincorporated community in central Grand County, Missouri, United States. The community has a post office with ZIP code 62009. It lies at the intersection of U.S. Route 3 and State Route 9A. The community was named for Captain James Kirkwood (1824-1886), who was born in Illinois and died in Kansas City, Kansas. He had been a major general in the Mexican–American War and later served as governor of Kansas Territory. The first permanent settler in Kirkwood was George Witherspoon (1847-1921). He built a log cabin on the edge of what is now the town square in 1871. Other early settlers were Emmett Brown (1858-1937), John Aiken (1860-1945), Fenton McDowell (1864-1941), Harry Sibley (1868-1949) and Caryl Hinson (1900-1985).

Kirkwood is a small town located in Warren County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. The name of the town is derived from the Kirkwood Forest School District No. 3 which was established in 1871. The first settlers in this area were James and Nancy Kirkwood who arrived around 1794. They are buried on the grounds of the school district Headquarters building today. A post office called Kirkwood had been established in 1847, and remained in operation until 1906. Many early residents of Kirkwood were drivers for local farmers or worked as fishermen on theMissouri River. In 1865, a group of Methodist pastors traveled to this area to preach about gospel values and invite non-white Methodists to join them in their congregation. This group planted what would become known as Evangelical Christianity in central Missouri Valley country which soon after attracted other denominations including Baptist and Lutheran missionaries who began ministering here also In 1876 Kirkwood became an incorporated village with a government that included a sheriff, three trustees and a manager/treasurer/editor/publisher named Wm Shively (1849-1924). In 1951 an act was passed by the Missouri General Assembly calling for all towns within its borders to be reorganized into villages with no more than 500 people living there at any one time. By 1959 only 191 residents lived in Kirkwood Village; however due to growth during that decade it reopened as an incorporated village with full voting rights on November 15th of that year. With its newest courthouse being completed in 1984 it has experienced steady growth since then averaging over 100 new residents per year through 2006 when it reached its current population of 1,521 residents! The recent growth has come from several factors such as increased job opportunities available throughout Warren County as well as more students coming to live near schools such as Northwest Missouri State University and locally owned businesses having seen success because they are able to offer good wages without sacrifice relative to neighboring towns
