During the American Civil War, many people in America fought for Confederate forces including some of Kirkwood's residents. One resident, Isaac Townsend, served as captain of Company K of the 21st Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment (later known as 3rd Missouri Infantry) during the war period. Today, most people within Kirkwood are descendants of those who settled here during its early years. Some notable citizens include Eva Walker who played golf at Augusta National Golf Club; her husband Drury Walker was also one of America's first professional golfers; Judge Royce Stephenson IIIa judge who presided over trials in Clay County; as well as entrepreneur Donny Hathaway whose commercial enterprises have included a manufacturing plant and restaurant called Donny's Place which opened its doors to customers on November 25th 1994
